has delivery miles just a quick question whats your opinion on running it in i was thinking along the lines of not going over 3 k revs till 300 miles then 3.5 k till 400 then 4 k till 500 miles then after that drive it like it should be :p or do you suggest otherwise

  Lotus Elise 111R
Personally, I use 3k for 1000 miles, but they do say now that you do not have to bother running them in I believe.

You'll get lots of different opinions . Personally when i bought my 172 and 182 i didn't thrash em , but didn't drive em like a grandad either . Limited it to around 90mph for the first 500 miles then after that drove em both normally . Both cars never missed a beat .

I was actually told by the Renault salesman at one garage to drive it hard from day one .

I heard that the engine has already done 500 to 1k before putting it into the car so that the engine has no metal from wearing in it so they change oil etc to remove filings. could be nonsense tho

thanx for the comments i think ill go for the 500 miles of normall driving cant really go wrong there i think.

  FN2 Type R +MK6 Golf
My 182 had 1k of normal slightly spirited driving and then after that the gloves were off

Really i've not heard that before.

Marky what colour is your R27?

  A4 Avant
I had loads of conflicting advice when I asked the same.

I just took it steady only going above 4500rpm a few time for the first 1000 miles. After that the rev limiter was used often. :)

id imagine they do run them a fair bit and flush them a few times at the factory, else ud get all kinds of crap going thru the engine from the manufacturing process, dust, bits of metal etc..

I doubt that very much . Can you imagine the time and money involved if every engine was bench tested before fitting to every car built ?

they cant just put it into the car without testing there is some quality control and testing, hard to believe from renault i know. if they didnt you would not have the smooth ride from day one it would vibrate horribly until the excess metal etc around the moving parts has worn then you would have to have the garage flush the engine that would be even more expensive. its a sport remember might not be like this with the other models

  MG ZS180 Mk2
My R27 was kept below 4k for about 250 miles.
Then, below 5k until 450 miles and below 6k until 600.
Since then, (now on 1150) it pulls very well.
Defo much more torque mid range than the 182 had.
Sometimes I think I have a diesel engine fitted.

Below 3k? I dunno how you could drive round in such low revs. I wouldn't be able to resist...

  MG ZS180 Mk2
Whats the average life for a dash bulb as my gear change one has had some considerable use since the 600 miles mark.

  MG ZS180 Mk2
^do what.

Does the gear change light not indicate the optimum time to hammer it in to the next gear?

  R53 Cooper S
just drive it like you feckin stole it! no need to 'run in' modern cars imo, just make sure it's up to temp

  MG ZS180 Mk2
Whatever.

I take it as a hint rather than a warning.

If I wanted to change gear at a lower RPM I would have bought a Dci

  MG ZS180 Mk2
I am well happy.

I own the best sporting clio model ever created! ;)

Must try and change gear sooner :dapprove:

wrong, its not a ford anglia engine, tollerances are bollock on these day, metal floating round inside the engine? don't be daft

thrash it from day one

Some people in this thread should really learn to shut up and not post if they don't know what they're talking about, rather than guess and make fools of themselves....

Exactly right. Modern engines don't need to be molly coddled because, as you say, the manufacturing tollerances are tiny nowadays. The idea of bits of metal floating about is ridiculous. Moving parts loosen up over time, sure, but the days of pistons fitting properly once they'd been forced to are long gone

Always thought it was a load of b****cks myself, when I spannered for a motocross team the engines went in, the bike was started and taken to the line to be raced. No *****ing about, just get on with it!

Thats an interesting looking Williams in your avatar ;)

As for the initial question, warm the engine up as you would normally then once warm drive it as hard as you like. Not a clio, but have driven my punto like this and it hasnt missed a beat in 23k miles!

Nope they don't do this at all.

Quality is built in no need to test every car.

A sports no different thn a normal car though.

Yep you do need to bed it in idealy get the revs up ain the first 25 miles and engine on full loads and let off the throttle to help the piston rings bed in. also don't labour the car keep the revs up et all the time.

People love to slate them unfairly.
