surface area of air filter

does this make a blind bit of difference?

im not talking about standard panel filter, i mean aftermarket induction (cone type)

if you have pipework leading to tb of 70mm ID then all you really need is a filter to cover this? its just looking at the itg/pipercross filters they are mahoosive! whereas the filters you get in an enclosed kit are quite small

does the filter really NEED to be that big?

In my experience i had a k+n apollo which was way too small imo . It seem to strangle the engine and lost the 5k kick .

I now have a green cone filter ( also a k+n cone ) in a custom enclosure , the surface area of the cone filter is alot bigger than that of the oem panel filter . It definitely hasn't lost any power , still pulls hard and retains the 5k kick .

On the 1*2's i think the thing that determined the size of the oem filter was lack of space in the engine bay .

Just my thoughts anyway .

i would of thought the only thing that could cause the 'strangle' effect would be a very inefficient filter material?

obviously the filter is bigger than the 70mm ID of the pipework, so i cant see there being much of a problem? is the bigger itg/pipercross filter like that to minimise heat soak?

im just playing with ideas here ;) i'm still gonna go ahead with my plan, just wanted some opinions or technical knowledge :)

if its rubbish i'll just get a ph1 airbox setup

i think the bigger size of airbox/filterhousing will give a bit of "play" when blipping throttle. think it needs this or it may be too restrictive in means of fast throttleresponse ? With the bigger space there will be a little air-reserve built up for next throttle-opening.
