swap for 172?

Hey all,

I drove the EVO long termer when I worked on the mag in 2002 and was blown away by it. Ever since then i've wanted a phase 2 172 but am only now in the position to be able to get one. I had a 306 Rallye and loved that dearly but I really want to try a 172 for a while as it might turn out to be even better!

I'm look to trade in one of my Mk1 GTi's against one.

If anyone knows of anyone who would be interested in would be much appreciated.

Cheers rory - always wanted BBS RA's on a MK1 and the do look the mutts!

Its silly to have two of the same car - a Clio 172 and a Mk1 would have a good pair though

Welcome fella, hope you find the 172 your after. Theres plenty about. Just be sure to look at and drive a few before you buy. Like every car theres good ones and bad ones, however apart from interior rattles, theres not much wrong with them.

Things to watch for:

Worn alcantara seats, steering wheel wear, OE exhaust is poor quality. Apart from that under the bonnet theres not a lot goes wrong with them, mostly wear on the interior trim.

In fact, i know just the person. Lad off here is selling his 172 Cup for 5k plus p/x. I brought my last last 172 off him, he's from yorkshire way.

Nice chap, he might be interested in a p/x on your Golf. Can't go wrong buying a car off here though, most if not all have been looked after.

If it was now i'd probably have to swap my blue one as the green one isn't quite ready yet. I haven't really thought about what i'm after for my blue mk1 - i haven't had it long and wasn't expecting to get such a sudden urdge for a phase 2 172.

Its a very late Helios Blue Campaign model with FSH from new and 12 months ticket. Just serviced it and its driving as new (798kg's, stunning steering, grip and grunt and 35mpg!!)

There are some minor scratches so I supose I'd take £2.7k with the BBS RA's included, though it's be a painful decision. The Clio 172 is just such a good car though..

Ozzy - had a look at that link. Looks like the gap between what he wants in cash and what I can afford is just too big, even before any negotiation. I'd rather a cheaper 172 anyway to be honest - the lack of ABS on the Cup is a concern for me also.

Driven properly not having ABS is better. On track the ABS can be a bit of a hinderance, and only when you drive beyond the conditions can it bite on the road.

Ph2's are about for seriously cheap money for early plates. Later cars came cruise control, so if you can live without that they can be had for £5k-5.5 for decent examples

Am looking for an earky phase 2 for around £4-4.5k - a tall order, I know.

I'm an advocate for ABS as in a panic situation its human nature to hammer the brakes on. I'm also used to ABS equipped cars and its got me out of bother a few times..
