swapping cup for 172, £10 cheaper

I can swap my 03 Clio 172 cup, for a 52 clio 172 sport with 5k miles(4.5k less than mine) and itll cost me £10 less per month!
Plus i will have a/c, half leather, ABS (need that), them bright headlights and a spare wheel too. happy days!

ur gonna regret it lol!
he wont hear you the air con is on full and that thicker glass...

they are the figures renault gave me??:D

Why Bother? cos its got all the goodies that the cup aint got and its plenty quick enough to scare off most competition!

I think in a year or so cup prices will be higher than a 172 for a same year model, though from the above it appears it may already be happening!

I have to admit, Ive considered doing the opposite swap to Gwynny!!!
The grass always looks greener on the other side...

Ive considered a 182 with the Cup bits on, but decided it aint worth it!

The 172 may not feel as raw but youll still get a hell of a drive. They handle just as well as a williams and are slightly quicker to the ton.So if it does that youve still got a quick car.

Why do you need ABS? I had it in my Dynamique, and I used it... errr... twice... both times in ice where it is no fecking use anyway! It is unnecessary and I find the brakes in the Cup outstanding. Learn to cadence brake if you are that bothered, or you could just allow a sensible braking distance. You DO NOT NEED ABS, you big girls blouse!

Additionally, you will use the air con about 5 times in the year.

Leather - ok, I wouldnt mind that.

Spare wheel - yep, Id be happier with one of them too

"Them bright headlights" - will cost you a fecking fortune when they inevitably die.

No need for the sarcasm old chap. He is merely expressing an opinion.
I bought a Cup because I preferred the colour - silver wasnt available when I ordered mine.
Essentially it does look the same shape - you cannot see 3mm really - the same shape as any other Clio: 1.2 to 172. However, looking closer, the Cup is different from the 172 in a few small details - such as the spoiler, and the splitter.
Talking about depreciation, he is most likely correct. There are a lot more Cups around than the words limited edition would have you believe, but there are still FAR fewer of them than 172s. What I really dont inderstand is why this chap is changing his Cup for an older model 172 for the sake of a few quid. Saving £120 a year for a few fairly useless extras seems, in my honest opinion, bizarre.

Look the same? Yeah, right.
For f**ks sake they are the same! Diff alloys a slightly diff spoiler and a splitter!! park them next to each other and the only obvious diff is the wheels.

Personally tho i think youd be mad to get an older car for the sake off a hundred quid a year! Unless you really want a 172 then good luck.

"I can swap my 03 Clio 172 cup, for a 52 clio 172 sport with 5k miles(4.5k less than mine) and itll cost me £10 less per month!"

WHY oh WHY?

I can swap my 53 Clio 172 Cup for an E reg Metro MG Turbo and save £12,200... but no, cos my Cup has three years warrantee, is newer and less likely to go wrong, is far from its MOT...etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc

ARE YOU INSANE?

"For f**ks sake they are the same!"

So its all a big marketing ploy is it? Renault just made the exact same car in a different shade of blue, priced it £1,500 cheaper, and paid off just about every motoring magazine to say it is different from the standard 172, and better in many ways, did they?

The great thing about the Cup boys and girls, is to the untrained eye it looks like any other Clio. However, you know when youve been Tangoed!

However, Steve, that Viper thing does make a difference to the car, I think.

Cant see the attraction of having "toys" on a car. Do they really make that much difference?

Air con - in the UK? LOL

Just wind the window down;)

ABS (not a toy) - had it on my last 2 cars and never needed it - maybe one day I will but if im thinking like that id buy a volvo.

Bright headlights? buy some better bulbs.

I would choose a Cup everytime - but were all different and im not having a go just my personal opinion;)

At the end of the day it is all down to personal preference.

The topic about which looks better, handles better and goes better has been debated many times before. As many people have already said, if you like your toys/extras go for the 172, but if you like your driving a bit more focused go for the cup.

I think theyre both great cars, my 172 has done 23k and i still love the driving experience.

172 Stu..

I say go for it - the toys do make a difference. Air con is not just for the summer - because the air is dehumidified itll clear your misted up windscreen in winter in the time it takes to flick the switch without having to wait for the engine to warm up.

YES Jon et al who needs ABS - another gimmick dreamt up by the motoring world how many times can you get on and off the brakes in a sec with candence braking 2 - 3 times, compared to ABS, thats not really effective!

And leather is SEXY so there!

Is that sarcasm? Oooh, well done. Im impressed.
Advanced driving teaches you cadence braking, and it is useful.
In two years of owning a car with ABS, and in 8 years of driving (hire cars with ABS off and on) I have used it (Ill say again) twice.
ABS may be useful from time to time, but it gives people a false sense of security. It came on in my car both times on ice. No friction - no braking. End of. It seems also that these people who do not allow sufficient braking distance on the motorway believe their cars can stop whatever the circumstances.

Cos the effort of wiping a window is just too much!

The 172 is a great car - I love the leather, and the xenons, the ABS would be useful if I ever find myself in an emergency situation in the wet, and Air con would be great on those hot summers days.......

But for me the Cup has more road presence (due to colour, it looks more chunky - due to the different wheels, wider / lower stance), is more focused, and id rather forgo those extras and enjoy The car in its more raw form. The performance (as in speed, there isnt a great deal between them, but handling and feel.....there certainly is, fact.)

Each to their own, if you really want to change, do it!! Just make sure you extensively test it - rev the nuts off it / chuck it about for quite a few miles on different roads without the salesman in the car!! (Didnt you do this prior to buying one - if im gonna spend 13K on a car I want to know ive made the best possible choice in terms of what I expect from a car ive got to keep for 2 or 3 years!!! But then again, if you dont drive it in that way normally then you wont appreciate the difference anyway......but why choose the Cup to start with? It cant be price surely cause if youre gonna spend 13 you may as well spend 14,500 and increase your finance per month by what......£40 ish over 3 years??

The Guy might not be able to afford a new un???

Anyways on the ABS front, apparently the 172 with ABS,EBD,EBA - Does 100-0 in 3.99secs beating the 911 and the R500!!

Article from the article section on here.

The Clios combination of disc brakes front and rear with an anti-lock system and electronic brake distribution means that maximum braking effort is individually regulated to each wheel. This system, combined with the Clios light kerbweight of 1,035 Kg, enables it to slow quicker than just about anything else on the road. (Will be the Mk1)

IMHO ABS is worth its weight in gold!!
