Swapping parts from a non-sport to a 172(engine parts)

  Astra 1.9Cdti SRi
got a few issues im trying to resolve here so i can if i have to start shopping around and get them ready.

first off is im puttin a 172 engine in my car, which is a 1.2 16v at the moment, now the parts im wondering about are..

Hubs
droplinks
wishbones
steering collum
powersteering pump
radiator
driveshafts
Steering rack

Could i use some of these parts to work with the 172 engine ?

Luke also mentioned Anti Roll bar may be bigger, is it ?

also can you mention any parts i might have forgotten about aswell please,

cheers
J

i'm running complete 1.2 front end (suspension, subframe, hubs, rack etc etc) the only thing that isn't 1.2 is the cup engine and box (plus wiring obviously)

How fred?

id though the driveshafts teeth on the sport would be different on a 1.2 hub ? if that means i could get away with keepin the suspension etc then would reduce my cost,

  Astra 1.9Cdti SRi
that is odd,

but you mentioned you had a cup engine, the one im pickin up is only a 172 standard, still be the same? or is there any different to them

  Astra 1.9Cdti SRi
my 1.2 doesnt have aircon, so could i just remove this from the 172 engine?

ah right, how did you manage to solve the PAS then ?

  Astra 1.9Cdti SRi
Jesus you mad, il need ABS, i have been without it for 6months, didnt notice anything different out of it tho, but since itl be a big step from 1.2 to 2L, then it would be usefull,

you had any running problems by using 1.2 gear Fred?

  alien green rs133
my car has electric, if its hydro you will see a bottle under bonnet and the pump obviously on the aux belt

i plan to run 172 running gear on my 1.2 > 1.6 conversion and hoping 172 track rods + ends are different length as i plan to swap with 1.2 ends and keep Electric rack

not ideal setup but saves a huge ball ache if it all fits right :D

not sure then hutchie, but il give it a look over tommorow, i kno i have water & brake fluid and thats it lol,.

If i do have a electric 1, wouldnt it be easier then if i did the same as what your planning to do?

means a little bit of work on engine its-self to get rid of PAS pump but overall should be easier and if you plan on running 1.2 wishbones etc no need to change and steering etc just engine like fred has already mentioned

  Astra 1.9Cdti SRi
sounds more hard than what i was expecting, but just hope its electric now,

what about the braking system tho hutch? would that need altering in any way

  alien green rs133
if you wanna run sport brakes you need sport hubs, wishbones, steering

only way around this is 1.2 big brake conversion of k-tec or similar

  Astra 1.9Cdti SRi
not really as i am in the pipeline to get the big brake kit, or even 4 pots,

but as in the actual braking im on about, on your 1.2 under the water bottle, theres like a box with a few green ish pipes coming from it, i take it thats the brake master cyclinder? or not lol.

renault list two different types of track rod end for the 172, wonder if the thread is same, if so might be able to get away with just changing track rod ends

thats the abs unit :D master cylinder is down the other side of engine bay and iirc servo is other side of bulkhead... its in between brake pedal and master cylinder anyway.

work at family owned renault specialists :D (ex dealer but renault pissed us off)

ill let you know what i find with steering components :D

  LY 182
same as me,, all 1.216v shafts hubs subframe the lot except the engine and gearbox..

running no abs, and was using no power steering but i've now got an electro-hydraulic pump running a 172 steering rack

hutchie how much would you charge for a 2.0 conversion if i got all the parts?

i work on a non-quote labour based setup

if it takes one day you get charged one days labour, if it take 3 weeks of solid work then expect a huge bill.

tbh if you supply all the parts it shouldnt take too long and thus not cost much ;)

labour 37.50 + vat an hour, cheaper than most places ;)

  LY 182
how do you find it with no abs ditz ?
fine, you just have to know how to drive!

it needs biasing properly though.

personally i hate driver aids and think they are the reason for the shocking standard of driving today

  Astra 1.9Cdti SRi
ahh ok, been driving before without ABs, was just more easy on the brakes rather than using them harder,

What about the PAS & aircon, when iv removed it, will there be any running problems then?

  LY 182
you just need to learn cadence braking etc..

nope,, no pas gains you power (about 7bhp historicly so i was all for that) and aircon is just dead weight.

with my new pas setup i have best of both worlds

  Astra 1.9Cdti SRi
true,

but as the aircon is removed, would i need to change the alternator & belts to make it as the cup setup ?

  Astra 1.9Cdti SRi
& also your Electro Hydro, how did you manage to set up this? sorry bit of a n00b with all this stuff, so need to gather every bit of info i can :)

  LY 182
yeah you need the cup bracketry or you can get the brackets off a volvo i think its a 480 you want

  LY 182
its using an electric PAS pump for a saxo vtr,, custom power steering pipes plumbed in to the 172 steering rack

  Astra 1.9Cdti SRi
volvo 480 crist ancient car's, dont see many on the road, il have a gader for 1 :),
cheers ditz, i may contact you if i need any more info fella.
