Taking iphone to america

Anything i need to turn off on the phone to stop it streaming data? I don't fancy coming back to a big phone bill. I know i'll need to SSH into my phone to turn off my lockscreen since it constantly updates the weather forecast on it.

Also, the hotel we staying in has free wifi, that works the same as over here right? it won't cost me anything to use it?

Wifi will be free, just need to turn off your 3g AFAIK.

This. Did it last week while abroad. Used tomtom loads and got plenty of messages from other apps that roaming was disabled so they could not connect.
Toms suggestion would also work of course.

WiFi On.
Skype On. 10 Euro lasts me 2 weeks at about 2-3 calls a day to UK mobiles.

O2 wont even know youve been away.

Airplane mode on- This deactivates wifi but you can reactivate this without it coming out of airplane mode. This is what I did in the USA, stops people from ringing you and spoiling yer hols.

It does then you need to manually switch it back on as Daz says, saves me a fortune when away.
