Tapping sound from engine?

  Clio 172
Got a annoying slight tapping sound coming from the engine when it's idling any ideas what it could be? If you rev the car a bit the tapping speeds up then goes away for about 10 seconds but then starts again?

I think it's coming from the cylinder head, any ideas?

Thanks

its a renault they renowned for it. Myne taps a little on start up for about 20seconds. Fully synthetic 5w 40 seems to make it better (i.e not as loud) from past experiance

I have only just got the car so going to do an oil change got some Elf fully synth evolution oil from Renault so will do an engine flush change oil and see what happens.

I know I could do a search but what is the dephaser?

Thanks

If it is the dephaser (and it sounds like it) stop running the car now! When it fails it'll cause as much damage as the cambelt snapping, as it stands now a new dephaser is circa 100 sheets and the cost of a cambelt on top.

I'd suggest you do a search, its hardly a great effort and theres plenty of info on it, including some videos of the noise and what happens when you keep running the car.

Will almost 100% be the dephaser, it'll stop knocking as you pick the revs and and it advances then return as the revs drop and it retards.

Depends where the noise is coming from. You need to see where the noise is at it's most, ie - around the engine mount or around the rocker cover, etc...

I had a problem like this, turned out to be the tappets and also needed to replace the dephaser pully, was told that the person who had the car before me had put some really shitty cheap oil in which made it do this. It made a loud tapping when it was ticking over, but as soon as i touched the acclerator the noise disappeared.

Ok i was sick of reading dephaser pully and not being able to find any information on the net other than Renault forums. Found this on pistonheads:

The sprocket on the inlet camshaft is adjustable for timing advance but it wears internally and wont lock correctly. Rattling noise is caused by inner section of dephaser snapping forward and back against resistance of camshaft and valve springs.

Is that right? How expensive if this to put right at a garage?

^^ I'm not sure if the 1.4's have one.

Tapping could be lots of things. The engines are quite tappety anyway. How long have you had the car?

Dephaser pulley tends to make it sound like a diesel on idle and then when you increase the revs it will go until the revs drop again.
The carbon canistor wil make a tapping noise and this will appear to come from the left hand side of the engine.
Could also be the aux belt pulley as when mine started to go it made a tappy whiney noise.
As said what oil does the car have in it? Has the oil been changed recently and does it have enough in there?

The thing is everyone hears noise's differently so its hard to tell from just a discription of the noise. Any chance of a video?

You haven't got a dephaser so your safe on that one.
