Re: Team Djw's Dedicated Track Toy Project

My wife is 27 weeks pregnant and the house isn't ready. I wouldn't place much

Good stuff John!

If you don't finish it in 13 weeks you wont for another 2 years then! I would try and get it done before the wee one comes.

If you were s**tting yourself as much as I am....

You'll be fine. Men have been fathers for thousands of years but it does put a whole different perspective on life! First 3 months were a blur with the lack of sleep but after 6 months it's all good fun. Cars really do take a back seat though unfortunately.

Well I'm sure you all forgot about this or thought we had again but nope, we haven't. We did nowt from the last update at the start of Jan until the 30th of March when we started getting front end sorted properly which was far more involved than we expected. Whilst Dave tinkered with that that I hid the wiring in the back and stripped out all boot wiring except the 3rd brake light.

Then the next Saturday morning it was a bit more of the same, lots of grinding, some drilling and some, er, well you could call it fabrication but it wasn't that. But it now looked complete and the fitment doesn't look too bad at all. For a track car its pretty damn good in our opinion!

The following Saturday morning (spotting a theme here??) we started off by meeting at the scrappys where we picked up a non abs brake pipe that we were missing and then headed to the garage. There we fitted that, fitted the last couple of brake line bits like the rear compensater and braided rear lines and then filled and bled the whole system. Got a really good pedal on it now.

We then chucked on the coilovers front and rear, still set at the same height as before but obviously still no weight in the front end so it now sat like this.

Which now takes us to last Saturday morning, no work on the car as such but we did load up the engine into a van and take it to Rentec Edinburgh (http://www.rentecautocare.co.uk/) who sorted out the rocker gasket, sump gasket and full timing belt kit.

No pics of that but today we got up and got through well before they opened and picked it up, finished, with a couple of extras thrown in and had a good chat with Bryan, we'll defo be using them again, great price as well. So we got it back to the garage, went and picked up the clutch, box fluid, etc etc and came back and got started for a couple of hours this afternoon.

Started with Dave fitting the clutch and me working on the other side we quickly got the box, timing covers, water pump etc on,

And then put the engine in

And then just tinkered away with wiring, cup setup, engine mounts, exhaust manifold and decat and all the other jazz. Left it sitting like this now

And it has obviously brought the height down a bit!

More to come soon. Really. We promise.

Re: Team Djw's Dedicated Track Toy Project

Getting there! Looking quite a bit difference from the last time I seen it.

  Many.
Actually subscribed to this thread from your last update lol.

As I was scrolling the pics I was looking at the things you've cut etc to fit the Ph1 front end. Looks like hassle mind, and I do prefer PH2 mostly. Its only Dan that is hella gay and wants a Ph1.5.

Progress looks good, looks like you've finally done loads in a short amount of time.

Much left to do to get it running? I assume thats whats next?

We would've had to buy ph2 bits and prefer the ph1 front end as well! Doubt we would do it for a road car though tbh, unless there was a good reason for it!

Not really, hopefully! 95% of the wiring has been done, need to finish off the aux setup (10 minutes left in that), do the plumbing, run the fuel line and see what happens. Or doesn't!

Lol, found a ph2 boot button surround today that I think he needs but don't tell him ;)

Yeah, not much at all really, we'll hopefully get down 1 evening this week and next Sat morning. Time is still tight, today has been the longest we've had, till 4 but with picking the engine etc up we didn't get started till after 12.

This looks good.

Leave my ph1 out of it, keep up the bullying and Ill buy some gay convertible (mx5/z3)

Mx5 ownership is a djw rite of passage, but not for anymore than a couple of months.

Cheers all, we've actually been really enjoying the last 4 weeks with it which always helps.

No pics of tonight but we popped down for another couple of hours. All the wiring is done. Hopefully! We'll find out soon! The abs removal means there will be warning lights but hey ho, we'll get that seen to in time. Cub. did you ever find a way to get rid of them without a cup loom? As obviously we can't use one with our cable throttle!

Got the wiper linkage, washer bottle, new fuel filter on as well. Djw Dave did some drilling and painting. He's a much much better painter than I will ever be so it actually looks good!

Jobs left before we crank it are the last run of fuel line, driveshafts in so we can fill the gearbox and get an inlet manifold and lambda sensor. To keep it running we need to pop the aux belt on,play about with hoses to bypass the heater matrix that we won't be running and fit the centre section and back box.

Cub.

Only way to get rid of them I believe is to swap the clocks to cup clocks iirc. I have the ABS part of my loom cut out, but the light is still triggered. Obviously.

I didn't bother, just blanked off the light for the MOT ;)

I have some cup clocks, and next time the dash is up I'll fit them. Dan@SJM did try to do it on CLiP but I believe it didn't let you reprogram it out.

Went down all by myself today :(

Was a bit faffy and not the most successful of days but its still closer to being finished than it was this morning! So started off with loosening the manifold as we'd forgotten to put the dogbone mount on. So chucked that on and refitted the manifold. So now its running the 2 vibratechnic mounts, purple powerflex dogbone and standard 4th mount. Its f**king solid!

Moved onto to the exhaust, fitted the lambda and then cleaned up the orbisoud joints and fitted the centre section. But the decat must be ph1, 1 lambda length as its about 2" short of the centre section and when you hold the backbox onto it its sits well behind the bumper. At least Dave as a sports cat that will fit so we'll just use that instead and get another decat at a later date. Irritating but not the end of the world.

Every since we refitted the steering column its had a huge amount of play in it so removed that as we've got another one on its way. Then got the drivers wiper off but the passenger one is absolutely solid. My usual tricks didn't work so its now covered in oil and I'll try again. Just wanted to fit the scuttle panel really. Filled the engine with oil and then put the rad and pipes on. Can't find the small one for the top of the coolant bottle and we need to either get a u-piece or fit the heater matrix before thats fully finished.

I did however then connect up the battery and checked that the immobiliser switched off. Which it did :D:D Didn't crank it as Dave wasn't there and there's no fuel anyway.

Just one pic as I'm lucky enough to own an iphone that hates being outside and cold!
