TelePhoto Lens

Im getting abit bored with my STD lens on the D40x(18-55mm)

I'm thinking a Prime but due to the D40x it will cost £170 , which is the same as a 55-200mm zoom lens.

I do get alittle frustrated with the Zoom on the STD kit but after seeing the result of a Prime lens, i am also tempted.

I know alot of folk on here have a prime so they will praise it. People with experience in both would be beneficial.

Im leaning towards a telephoto lens, just as i think it will be quite cool + differnt to zoom in etc. Sometimes i have felt a bit frustrated with a lack of length.

But im not sure what to do?

Prime:

Telephoto

I can get this telephoto for £170 from elsewhere.

What do you need more?

Shallow depth of field, low light shooting and a traditional focal length vs more reach.

Depends entirely what you are shooting and what limits you more, a slow small aperture lens or a lack of reach.

Yeah thanks, i guess the lack of reach can be a bit of a PITA tbh. The small aperture doesnt really bother me too much as of yet. SOrted chap

i'm sure this prime will fit if you don't mind manual focusing: http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-nikon-50mm-f1-8-d-af-lens/p12869

depends what you want really though as prime and telephoto and quite different types os lens, can go wrong for that price for the prime though.

Cant be arsed with mAnual Focus. I looked at that, but im edging towards Telephoto. Wish the D40x had more AF lens options TBH

I love my WA Sigma lens, I'm actually thinking of getting another Sigma one too for portraits and macro shots.

I have a Tamron telephoto lens at the moment that I use as my "everyday lens" (18-250mm) it's quite good :)

I have that 35mm AF-S lens and I love it! very handy little thing. All depends on what you like to photograph but I would imagine at some point, you will acquire both items. Get the 35mm, then save up for 70-300mm is what I would do.

I like the 18-105mm, nice kit lens but seeing how you already have the 18-55mm, I would get the 55-200mm. You wouldn't really "miss out" on close up stuff...just change the lens!

Ok i will look @ the Sigma, 55-200mm i assume would be decent enough for indoor shots, possibly in lower tungsten light?

I would not get any of those lenses!

I would go for the Nikon 55-200 VR

or Sigma 70-300 APO

The Nikon VR is very sharp and very good for the money, plus it has VR which is a great help! I have had this lens and highly recommend it as a companion to the 18-55. Its light, fairly compact and build quality is great for the price!

Nice review here:

None of the zooms mentioned are ideal for low light though.

Thanks JJ, i found a Sigma 50-200mm for £80 2nd hand but has no stabilisation?
Im leaning towards the Nikon AFs Dx vr tbh

When i say low light i mean restaurant levels etc?

The VR will help is lower light, will have to bump up the iso too, but it will certainly be better than the others. For a low light zoom you have to spend shed loads - or buy a longer reach prime.

Oh ok cool, If i was rollin & patrollin a city or a country walk, would a 50-200mm be a good choice of lens to go out in without a tripod?

I wouldn't use anything above 70mm without a tripod TBH

In good light 200 with VR is not an issue TBH - no tripod needed!

All of these were at 200 or there abouts hand held:

Not bad at all JJ, in good light yeah I've got some great shots off the Tamron 18-250mm in all fairness it was handheld too.

I took the 70-300mm Sigma out on Christmas day but it was getting dark - nightmare lol
