Its a french thing apparently . Its a gap in the reflective coating for automatic toll boths .

you right. its for toll passes to be mounted on the window with out being blocked by the UV protective sun block on the window.

I always thought it was for the sat nav to recive a signal.

Renault windscreens have an "anti-UV coat" on them.
The gap is simply to aid sat nav aerials etc.

I hadn't heard of the "automatic French tolls" until now but that now sounds an equal explanation.
Clever French getting us all thinking about a small, square gap in our windscreen coat.:star:
