The 197. My pennies worth.

I don't agree. How can it be faster with only 15 more bhp and weighs as much as a tank. Not as much grunt/harsh acceleration as a 182. They've messed up 6th gear aswell. I had 3700 rpm at 70mph - not for me

Yeah the 197s a better car but it just can't pull its weight, should have put the 2.0 dci in it.

Rather have a 225 far quicker

Interesting read but pretty much what everyone else says. I'm just wondering if it feels a lot slower because it's better built,

plus its bigger which makes it feel slower

the mk1 and mk2s are far better looking and feel more go cart

just cant wait for another new shape clio i think renault know they have messed up with this one

i said faster cross country not in a straight line.

Yeah its far better suited for that, as you said better width helps it glue to the road, better brakes & overall suspension. I'd say its a better car, but they should have made the engine to suit.

Renault going half way again with 197 bhp, ffs they can get 160+ easy out of that engine.

Sorry if that was unclear what I typed

when i first test drove one i thought it was shite. took it out 3 timesin total. last two times i had free reign for over an hour on cross country roads. fell in love with it.

having put 1500 miles on her since i can hand on heart say for me she is idela for me.

i think it takes more than a brief test drive to fully appreciate the 197's massive grip, handling and composure and outright class it has. it is a bloody fantastic tbh.

yeah it might be a tad slower but that ain;t the be all and end all. how often do you acvtually get into striahgt line drag races. (never in my case.)

the delghtful handling is such a joy and makes me enjoy the car so much. let alone the awesome noise it makes at 7k.

i have only covered a small amount of miles in her so far, but i will hopefully be taking her to the ring asap and will uncover mroe of her charm and undoubtably some things i don't like.

gets 9/10 for me ( should be 10/10 as it should be a slight bit lighter... but i can live with that, the 197 is still an amazing beast.)

It'll get faster as it loosens up, I've got a mate in a cup whos swears by that its really loosened up at 65k. Now on 70k

What would you have given your 182? Compared to the 197

Sort out 6th gear would be the main thing

Don't think anyone will argue with that, I could tell that pretty much 2 miles into the test drive, loads of grip and felt super composed, but felt so dull.

I know which one would be more fun though! ;)

cross country :approve:

Cross country drive in a 182 or 197, if you want a fun drive its a no brainer, 182 everytime, if you want just want to get from A to B take a 197.

i try not to compare the 182 to the 197 as i don't think they are from the same era or size of car anymore.

my 197 was sat next to a mates 2002 golf and is actually bigger!

the 182 vs 197 debate is all down to perosnal opinion. if you want a raw beast with quite a few quirks, get a 182. if you want a car that (IMO) iorns out these problems and moves the game on go for the 197.

I would give my 182 9/10. It doesn't get a 10/10 purely for the s**t seating position, gruff engine and crappy build. 182 is massive fun though!

both sexy time cars imo :approve:

if i was richer i'd have both!

i'll always disagree with you. but thta purely comes down to personal preference. :)

I find the 197 more fun over my 182 for a variety of reaosns i have stated before. - it handles better, is more composed at speed and much less twitchy on the edge so makes it more of an enjoyable and fun dirve for me.

but thtas the goodthing, the 197 ain;t for everyone, just liek the 182 isn't for everyone. :)

Most sensible post I have seen in a long time ;) You last sentance sums it up for me. Fully agree.

For me I like that twitchy 205 GTi esque nature of the 182, thats why I purchased it. As I posted on the other thread I would happily have a 197 to drive everyday alongside my 182, but not as a replacement for. I was impressed by the hour I had in the 197, but did have the "I want one feel" that I had in moments when I test drove the 182.

It all makes perfect sense to me now after this thread ... Despite having one to may Xmas drinks tonight.

Just noticed your if "I was richer I would have both comment". Had the same conversation last night with a friend who has a 306 GTi 6 who does not know what he would replace it with, and we came to the conclusion the only way would be happy is to keep the cars we both have respectivly and have the money to buy something in addition to them. My choices where the 197 or the current Golf GTi for daily use and my 182 as something for the weekend.

I think this highlights that wonderful thing known as "personal preference".

As everyone says, how boring a world would it be if we were all the same?

You buy whatever car you buy, be it based on personal preference, loaded or broke and god knows how many other circumstances, and if you find yourself having a complete riot in it and emerge smiling everytime, then who's to tell you you are wrong?

And who are you to tell someone else they are?

Drive what you drive, like what you like and hate what you hate but my god just enjoy it while you have it!
