The future : My Dilemma

  RB 197 fatty
ok, so as many of you know by now, iv got a s**t slow, nether the less cheap, economical, reliable 1.2 16v campus sport clio.

Since buying it back in january, i have started it on its slow quest to look like a 182.

182 look exhausts, Anthracite wheels, silver door badges...

Heres some pics for those that havnt seen it:

My delema is this, obvoiously im a big fan of the real 182, and would love to own one. reason for not owning one so far is insurance mainly, along with running costs.
In january im hopefully starting a new job (firefighter) and so i figured after i while (year or two) should be able to afford the real thing.
So do i carry on bringing my little 1.2 up into a world thinking its something its not, put a 182 bumber on, a cup spoiler, lower it 40mm, sideskirts etc.
Or do i wait... patiently, and endulge in the real world in a couple of years?

I know what i should do, and that its gonna be the views of most 182 owners on here....... but im just so bloody impatient!!! :D

The money you spend on your car is wasted. It doesnt make it faster, it doesnt increase its value and it is essentially that "wannabe" factor that no one wants. Like Ferrari bodykits for MR2s. Do you really want to go there?

IMHO tuck the money for mods away in preparation and saving for the 182. Other than that, go subtle. Some nice rims (16s tops) and a drop. See Pictures of Fred's 1.2 to see how they can be made to look good without making them wannabe Renaultsports.

im really happy with how mine looks now, and reckon i will most probably stp here and save and wait!........
............who knows, maybe a V6 will be on the cards!?!?

Firefighters don't actually make that much on their basic salaries. Most rely on having another profession from what I'm told.

yep your kinda right. i will get about £27,000 a year. but then work 4 days on 4 days off. at the moment i work for an event and marquee construction company and get paid hourly (£10), as and when i want. they are happy to let me work on the days off whenever it suits me!
Should all work out fine!

Personally speaking, if I were you. I'd just put a nice set of wheels on it and get it lowered and leave it at that for a while. If of course you have some money burning a hole in your pocket then by all means get the body kits, but as Dave says, do you really want it to look like something it isnt?

I have spent a few K on modding mine, but it isn't a 172/182 so I don't want it to look like one. I have bought a body kit to go on it, but not one that copies a 172/182, with the exception of the side skirts, and thats just because they are smooth and subtle.

27k pa ain't bad considering a qualified nurse is on around 16k working 12 hr shifts. Back on topic just lower it and leave it at that.

I wouldnt carry on spending money on your 1.2, it wont add any value when you part exchange it, and prob wont increase the money you get if you sell priv. Is it for your own reasons you want to make it look like a 182 ? Or just because you want to fool others ? But what do I know im not a 182 owner :p

Definitely agree with saving your money and getting a real RS. The money you waste making it look like one would pay for the insurance. I always say this to people who embark on projects like this, and usual get abuse back, but its a fact!

come to the next Bedford meet on the 10th and you can have a ride in my 182 and see if thats what you fancy ;)

your car looks tidy from the pic's but i'd agree with the rest and not spend loads on your 1.2 as you won't make much back on it

Brown.

honestly mate its worth the wait!!!! but if it dosnt cost too much to keep on with your project then keep it up, as it will pass the time and keep your car spruce..... i was 20 when i got my 182 and had 2years NCB it cos t 2k to insure, when i turned 21 i had 3yers NCB and it now cost 800.......

Dont continue with the 182 lookalike, change the bits on ur car u dislike then save for the real thing. Or go nuts and get the engine conversion when insurance permits from K-Tec ;)

cheers for all the good responses guys. i would never go mad and spend loads on a 1.2, just one mod seems to lead to anoter.

im not trying to fool people, because it wouldnt fool me. and whats the point. just fancied the exhaust and wheels really thats all.

im from barton, if you know here that is whoever it was that asked

alo i will definatly be wanting to attend the bedford meet on the 10th...wok permitting!

cheers again, Normy

  197-I love!!!
Yup-Not a bad salary-Save for a while and buy a 172/182-you won't regret it and I wouldn't spend anymore money on the 1.2-It looks good and you won't really put the value up.Good luck.

My friends in the fire brigade and he earns no where near that and has been doing it for 2 years so how can you say thats not enough for a 182 you could easily afford one on finance if you aint got the cash ready if you were earning that kinda money.

  RB 197 fatty
startin wage is 22,000for first 2 years (probational period) then it goes up, amount depending on area i think. bedfordshire being 27,000!

  LY V6 with Recaros
£27k is enough for a 182 isn't it? I'd say keep your one for a little while, then put the money aside that you would use for mods, and use it for insurance on the 182.

No, i seen him driving about, and know where he lives..... muhahahaha! so he thinks im stalking him now. he lives on same estate as a mate of mine. drive past his stunning little number everynow and again!
