I use standard reno elf oil. in two minds about silokene pro s,anybody use it?i've heard its good for those who use there cars on track alot, but for everyday driving its better going for a normal/standard oil? is that right or is ma mate chatting sh!te

yeah thats why i went there cos i remember you saying about the sockets - but i guess it was just for the freebie as i dont need the sockets so it worked out well for me

How come your using thinner oil? Personally when i did have it just stick the cheapest 5-40 i could find £15 for a gallon did the job

because its a modern engine and not some cranky old cross flow

on low milage modern engines the tolerances are very actrate and close so a thinner oil is usesd, if a thicker oil is used then it wont be able to flow as easy around the such smaller tolerances in the engine, if this occures then the wear on the engine will happen very fast (forced induction engines even faster) this is y when the engine has alot of miles on it the engine parts are all worn down so the tolernaces now are larger so this is when the thicker oil comes in to play and is used.

ive seen so many engine failers down to the oil used either not the correct type or cheap shitty oil, espically subaru boxer engines are renound for this.

In all honesty you will be fine with a thinner one but at high temps id rather have the thicker one

I was only keeping my car a year so wasnt to fussed what oil to use unless you rplanning on keeping it years or do track time/lots of hard driving then i wouldnt worry

Anyone tried the Chevron 5w/40 that Costco do?
It's something like 4l for £10 so I've always been weary of it. Although I can't see it being any worse than the Halfords or Comma stuff. Is it?

I plan on keeping my car for many years.... the dealer has always put 10W40 Shell Helix in (only noticed the other day, )... I am doing a change soon to what it says in the manual, i.e. 5W40 (obviously too much effort for the dealer to follow!).... Is this ok for long term engine rpotection, Or should i use a thinner one as mentioned above? So many different opinions on here, hard to know whats best! I don't take it round a track, I don't really boot it, only when the engine is very warm and to blow the cobwebs out!...

I use Motul V300 5-40 fully synthetic, A proper synthetic like silkolene

Halfords 5-40, made by comma so not as hit as you might first think and as mentioned before on offer for £24 for 5 lts!

Just use the recommended 5w40 by renault, then you wont need to worry about opiinions. Just get a good quality oil, not cheap tescos stuff. I also used the halford 5/40w Fully Synthetic. Oilman from opieoils says the halfords stuff isnt as good as a genuine synthetic.....but to be fair ive driven for many years and always used halfords oils and never ever had any engine issues as a result of wear and tear of internal components.

If you are going to use the "cheaper" brands like motul/halfords/etc then do the change once a year instead of every two years.
