The old PS3 vs 360 debate

Is anyone else like me thinking that it's kind of sad to see the ps3 hasn't lived up to what it was supposed to.

I'm the consumer who despite loving my 360 didn't actually want the ps3 to fail, i mean it hasn't failed but i'm almost sad to hear the poor reports on release day of people not turning up. It's like a poor kid who arranges a big birthday party and no one comes.

I've been into oxford circus and played on their demo one, i saw the bluray footage (which i must say was v impressive at 1080p). The games didn't have the wow factor i was expecting at all. I went through the chart title games for sale and noticed that virtua fighter 5 is the only game running at 1080p. Not even their flagship fps game was running at 1080.

The surrounding negative comments i seem to be hearing time and time again are literally making me feel sorry for them, i've always wanted deep down for the 360 to come out on top, mainly cause i bought into the idea early on and i love halo along with a lot of other titles i've got on it, but, i didn't want this to happen. Healthy competition is important and i would have thought that the extra year people have waited for this console would have had made more of an impact especially on release day.

I am also now in the position whereby i'm not buying anymore dvd's because i can't buy into either hd format - i don't want to waste money on a redundant format so i can't buy either till i get some idea of which will come out on top.

I'm sorry this is probably just a rant but i think i'm annoyed with the whole situation!

but... i think once the ps3 lowers price alot. and more games become available it will be a better console than its release. the games atm are a bit gash really.

I have a feeling GTA 4 will help the console do it justice by taking advantage of what it has to offer.

lol, the only reason people didn't turn up to collect was because they had ordered them for ebay thinking there would be a shortage but as sony provided plenty there wasn't an ebay market so the cut their losses.

its an amazing system, easily as good as the 360 and has had the biggest launch day of a console, so how do you come to the conclusion that it hasn't lived up to what it was supposed to?

i didnt think the turnout was that poor. I had a friend pick one up from the local Game at midnight and the queue was halfway round the shoppin centre.. and 2 hours long lol

not that il be buying 1 like, i recently caught onto the firmware flashing technique on the xbox 360 and filling up my game library that way :rasp:

I own a 360 and think it's a good console. I'm hoping the PS3 brings out some cracking games, as playing games that provides me the most enjoyment is the main thing, and competition is healthy. Btw all this fanboy thing is pathetic, even people who use that term are geeks :S

I really really hope this HD-DVD \ Bluray thing is sorted asap as that will make my hardware decisions much easier. It's a frustrating wait :dapprove:

always found it odd that if you have one console you have to **** the other one off,each to their own i guess but already owning a ps1,sold my ps2 and owning a xbox and a 360 i was still interested in the ps3 and would i want one?
as it goes i played call of duty 3 on sunday on my mates new ps3 then went home and played it on my 360 both running in HD and i couldnt tell the difference
i know what you mean about hd/blu ray and waiting i have a mini disc deck at home that hasn't been touched for years cus i rushed into it

Me too mate, I expected to buy both, but it seems alot of cash for what seems like 18 month old technology I agree. But then again, I can't see the prices dropping that much, and the Bluray side is so tempting :clown:

yes but if its as good as the 360 now at launch when the 360 is 18 months ahead then that means in 18 months the ps3 will be amazing and show its true power, thats the point.

I own both and think the online is better on the 360 but the single player games (especially racing games) are better on the ps3.

Blu-Ray already enjoyed a larger market share, 165,000 new owners last weekend of BD players in the UK cannont be a bad thing for future sales.

F1 is excellent, I'm considering buying Motorstorm this weekend.

many more words, most overhyped game ever, looked good but played crap, i was sooooo disappointed with it, really was, it was too short and too clumsy.

the game to have on the 360 is R6 at the moment, easily the best game out.

Not fully inderstanding the whole 1080p thing going on. someone care 2 explain? All i know is the xbox360 is laced up to a 50somthing inch lcd tv downstairs and lookin tasty

Apparently you get used to it - PC gaming doesnt have a rumble control mind. I have a feeling theyll release a rumble version soon enough though.

unless you go 40"+ it makes no difference as at 32" you can't tell the difference so for me it really doesn't matter as a 32" is already too big for my bedroom really.

THe rumble, i expected to miss it big time but i really haven't tbh, going over the curbs in f1 you get the feeling from the sound, it really dosn't need the rumble although i'm sure it would be good. The controller seemed very light at first too but i have got used to that now too so all is good.

Only virtua fighter 5 runs at 1080... Thats the only chart title running it for ps3 and its coming out on the 360 anyway.

can't believe some of you didn't like gow. I loved it, first game i completed and then immediately played again on hard!

guess we'll have to wait and see. All i'm saying is' with titles like gta coming out on the xbox, i won't buy a ps3 for like 1 or 2 games...

also fyi the differnece between 720 and 1080 is like uping the resolution on your pc...

As others have said the choice of games at the moment are not that great compared to the wealth of 360 games. Once they have caught up in that department I'm sure it will be as good if not better. They will drop the price, maybe not to Xbox level but at least so it is more accessible. The fact that it sold well over double the 360's sales in the first 2 days shows that people haven't lost interest. I nearly bought a 360 myself but just managed to wring out the last of my PS2.

I found that the controller was too light and missed the rumble, but I havent really played enough to get used to it.

After playing one round a mates house, I will certainly be getting one. I know the difference in graphics probably isnt that much, but ive always been a Sony boy and I like the way they do things and the games they will release will sway me easily. The free internet is a big thing too, Microsoft will always grab money in every area they can, and I feel like there games have always been aimed at PC users.

I have to argue the point about the 360 being a year or so ahead on the development front, and that developers have had 'more time' to prefect 360 games on a technical level... What people seem to forget is that the PS3 was due to come out only a few months after the 360, and the tech specs have been set for the last 18 months or so. The delay was caused by the Blue Ray lasers not being available, so the developers for the launch titles had all this time to perfect, polish and get used to the PS3 in this time, so really they are on more of a level playing field in this respect than people make out!

In an ideal world I'd have both, the 360 for the games and the PS3 for Blue Ray. Casino Royale in high def rocks!

Being a video game developer (I develop for both, Playstation 3 and XBOX 360) people ask me almost daily which platform I think is better. These are my personal feelings, in no way does this reflect my employer.
Short answer: XBOX 360.

Performance: On paper, the PS3 is more powerful. In reality, it’s quite inferior to the 360. Without getting into too many details, the three general-purpose CPU’s the xbox360 has are currently FAR easier to take advantage of than the SPU’s on the PS3

Graphics: The XBOX 360 is a clear winner. The GPU is more powerful. It has more powerful fillrate, and far more pixel and vertex processing horsepower. Part of the reason is their choice of memory, and architecture of pixel and vertex procesing. I can’t get into details but the same vertex shader will run much slower on the PS3 than the XBOX 360. The 360 also has a clever new way rendering high definition anti aliased back buffers. To accomplish the same effect on PS3 is prohibitively expensive. For this reason I think many games will have no choice but to run in non-HD resolutions on the PS3 version, use a lower quality anti aliasing technique, or do back buffer upscaling. The end result in all cases is going to be noticeably worse image quality.

Game Selection: The XBOX 360 has a huge head start here. 1 year is an eternity in gaming. Almost all multi-platform developers have made the XBOX 360 their primary platform due to timing of release-to-market, this means the games will look and perform better on the 360. The PS3 versions will be ports of the 360 versions. (The opposite was true for XBOX 1 vs. PS2). The XBOX 360 is also far faster to develop for due to better development tools (massively popular Visual Studio .NET vs. proprietary, buggy PS3 compiler and debugger), better documentation, and easier architecture (3 general purpose CPU’s vs. 8 specialized processors that require DMA). Timing has also caused all next-gen middleware developers to make XBOX 360 their primary platform, and they will ‘add ps3 support’ as needed. This support will probably be inferior to the XBOX 360’s due to manpower and more importantly, demand. It’s this catch-22 now that will continue to drive the 360 forward and hold PS3 back.

There you have it developer plugs the 360 over the PS3.

ALL major developers have already put there efforts into the 360 and are adding PS3 as additional support.

Most PS3 games are just Xbox 360 ports.

But..... PS2 was inferior to XBOX. Its not all about specs, its useability and the more to the point... The addictiveness of the games that always has me coming back to the PS2. I played on a PS3 the other night and it blew me away from the start, XBOX 360 hasn't done that yet... I'm waiting till September to pick me up a cheaper PS3. Though Halo is yet to come... AHHHH, Why can't Halo and GT HD be on both!!!

^^^ what game blew you away? I've played the release games and imported titles not in the uk yet and the only one which mildly held my interest was F1 (being an F1 nut).

I'm not saying one is better than the other as they both have strong and weak points, but you have to say the games thus far are nothing we havnt seen already. Wait till Rainbow 6 comes out on PS3, then you PS3 boys will have a game to get excited about if its anything like the 360 version!

As already stated most PS3 games are just Xbox 360 ports so PS3 owners are only experiencing what 360 owners have been for months if not a year.

One of the PS3's so called "must buy features" is 1080p but most games on the PS3 arent even true 1080P there either upscaled or 720p.

Clever marketing, but I think the PS3 has been released too late to take the market share like the PS2 did.

Both are great machines and both will still improve so it will probably be about the games. PS2 had an early advantage with GTA but not this time round!
