I'm probably being a r****d, but why does a key do something in one program, but nothing in another, yet the combination keystroke which appears to be mapped to the original key works in both?

PrtScrn in Windows 11 seems to be mapped to open Snipping Tool, which would usually be Win+Shift+S

When playing Ghost Of Tsushima, PrtScrn does nothing yet Win+Shift+S works perfectly

Surely the mapping is a Windows thing rather than a game specific thing, or does the game override Windows key bindings even if they aren't used in game? 🤔

I turned off the snipping tool shortkey in W11, was kinda annoying. You can map it back to regular print screen, which I prefer.

How does normal print screen cope with dual monitors though? One of the things I like about snipping tool is I can take a screenshot of just one monitor at a time

I did notice one weird thing, the framerate was fluctuating rapidly between 40 and 130 which was making the game feel stuttery, but when I enabled FSR 3 frame generation the framerate settled down to between 65 and 80 and felt perfectly smooth. The weird thing about that is I'm running a 10 series card which doesn't support frame generation, so enabling it should have had absolutely no effect 🤔

AMD's FSR3 (3.1) has frame generation that will run on 10xx series cards and also will work alongside nVidia's DLSS. It's one of the first games that has the two competing technologies working in tandem thanks to the decoupling of the frame generation in FSR3.1. Effectively, FSR3.1 will generate the frames, and then DLSS can upscale.

Games can programmatically override/enable/disable key bindings and combinations in many situations. For example, some games might disable standard print screen methods to support their own solutions or to prevent screen grabs from being taken.

That's interesting, I could have sworn I read it was only 20 series and newer that supported frame generation, and older cards could only use the upscaling feature. Having said that, I just happened to stumble on a wccftech article where they tested it on 10 series cards and found it worked. I guess it's just not officially supported but mileage may vary if you choose to turn it on. Works perfectly on this game, it runs buttery smooth with it turned on, and I much prefer running at native resolution instead of upscaling.

I thought that might be the case, the game obviously wants screenshots to be done via the photo mode. I'll just stick to pressing 3 buttons instead of 1 then.

I originally ordered this as my GPU

And due to stock issues they have offered me this as an alternative.

I've said yes, are they just like for like?

It's the "Super" variant mate - so yes, a better card with a mild performance increase over what you originally specced. All good! (y) :)

So, had everything I needed to build my PC tonight,

In 3 hours...

For ease I got the CPU fitted with the motherboard, job 1 complete
Fitted the RAM, easy enough, job 2 complete
Fitted the SSD, easy enough, job 3 complete.
Fitted the AIO cpu cooler, little tricky.

Was watching Linus video on how to build a PC and then followed the now test it part.

@SharkyUK I must apologise to you at this point. Could I not figure out how to hook it all up to the PSU, initially as any man would, I decided it wasn't my fault and called you every name under the sun asking what s**t this is I bought. I have since calmed down and realised that I'm just stupid, it was all me. I took a break, realised I'm about 85% retarded and now understand what is what.

Anyway, didn't bother testing it, packed it away and just going to build it straight into the case tomorrow as it can't go wrong.

But yeah.... it was more difficult than I expected.

That's not bad going at all, mate. You really do have to set aside a good few hours sometimes. Taking breaks is the best thing to do. Take a break to avoid making things break!

You're not retarded! 🤣 I can appreciate that the PSU and the fully modular nature of it might be a bit confusing. You're doing just fine and I'm sure it will be in the case and running fine in no time. Just make sure you can set some time aside as it is quite rare for systems to work the first time... 🫣

Thank you, the main issue was I didn't realise there was a 12 pin cable that split into two 8 pin connectors in the GPU box, that would then connect to the PSU two 8 pin to the PCIE 6+2 or something. So in my mind I only had the PSU PCIE lead to try and get into the GPU. It was when I was packing the GPU away after giving up that I realised my mistake and found the cable in the box :ROFLMAO:

I'm putting it down to the excitement of having all the kit there ready to build.

I'm currently hovering around a 50% success rate with systems booting up first time, but I still throw it all in the case before checking if it will POST 🤣

1 for 1 baby! 100% success rate.

For about 20 minutes I did invent some new four letter words again as every time I pressed the power button it did absolutely F all, checked it was plugged in, plug socket switched on, power lead attached, checked all the plugs were tightly fitted, smashed all my knuckles up and just as I was about to unplug it to strip it down I realised there was a power switch on the PSU as well lol.

I'm at the BIOS screen at the moment with no idea from here. Back to YT I go.

So that was the 990 pro? (don't fully understand all this)

That is what I have on my list. Just waiting for pay day to roll round and I'm going to pick the RTX4070 and storage. Then I'll get it built. Quite looking forward to it, especially as in the past I would have just credit card the lot in one go and got it done, buying it in bits and have it all sat there in boxes has been hard for the last few months.
This is what I went with in the end (still not sure on the separate 970 Evo for the OS. I think its just me being old and having it drummed into me that you always keep the OS separate from your apps.

If it any consolation - I've built PCs for decades and still get caught out occasionally by something not immediately working.

The golden rule is to put everything together in the most loose way possible and ensure that it works first. Once done, you can then spend time on the tidying up of cables, etc.

I did leave the cables until I had it powered up working.

One more question, the screws for the radiator to mount to the top of the case are not long enough and I literally have one holding it in. Are the like standard size little screws and where do I get longer ones? I'd hate to think of the damage it would cause if it fell off.

Read the mounting instructions for your radiator before sticking larger screws in there. Usually the screw is just long enough to engage with the threads on the radiator without going too far and damaging the fins, or worse puncturing the core and causing leaks. Double check you're using the correct screws first.

Doesn't say anything about mounting it. Looking at the supplied kit as well there is nothing with 8 screws to match the radiator either.

Add to that the radiator is slightly fouling the motherboard heatsink (??)

Anyway, long story short, one side fits in a slot and it was just sagging, so gaffer taped it for now until I figure it out.

Thank you though, all the help is appreciated.

I'm glad this thread popped up on my feed, I need a new PC for my lad, he mainly plays roblox and fortnite etc, I don't want to spend loads but don't mind up to 4-500.

Any suggestions of any pre built systems I can just buy and job done?

Would you consider a pre-loved one? For that price you might not get much new but possibly a pretty decent 4-5 year old machine.

You running a 240mm rad right? Usually it will come with 8 long screws and 8 short screws. The long ones can either just attach fans, or go through the case and fan as well to mount the radiator (sandwiching the fans between the radiator and case). The short ones are just to mount the radiator to the case if you have your fans on the other side.

If it's fouling on the heatsink you can try putting the fans on the bottom of the radiator instead of on top, that might give you more clearance. Or mount the radiator at the front of your case and use it as an intake, like this.

Anyway, take a photo of your rig and post it so it's clearer what the issue is 👍🏻

Will get a picture tomorrow but I have it mounted like that picture, case->Rad->Fans.

I'm starting to think I might have used the screws for the Rad to screw the motherboard down hmmmm. I can clearly remember two lots and I couldn't figure out why so just picked one lot.

I've got one spare, if you're interested drop me a pm and I'll send you details. It's better than the one in your link above.

They should be. As you say, you might have used the incorrect screws on this.

You can also get little rubber sections for fans which help reduce vibration. They were a worthwhile purchase on the replacement rad fans that I bought recently.
