The Power PC Thread [f*ck off consoles]

I order a lot of s**t, there is no question of that, and despite the forums, OCUK have been very reliable. Scan always seem to have an issue every other order with me for some reason. Sods law.

If I'd have waited 5 - 10 minutes for OCUK's store to come back online I probably would have been fine

I last ordered from them in 2011. I remember why now.

Hopefully I can get hold of a person tomorrow and find out what's gone on with my order, and how many weeks I now have to wait for stock
Main reason I order from them is that I can walk into the store and pick things up. It's literally a small detour for me on the way home and has the bonus of a cracking driving road over the tops, past Rivington.

However, despite my email alert informing me that Friday the 17th is the ETA for my 1080 - I don't believe it for a minute!

Fancy doing a driveby and kicking their esales people to death?

I use Scan for most stuff, very very rarely have any issue with them and even when I do it tends to be that the order doesn't get sent out on the day of ordering despite ordering before the deadline which is understandable if they get busy. I recently had to RMA a monitor with them which was the first real issue I've had to go through with them and to be fair they handled it pretty well and issued a replacement.

I've used OCUK a few times but they seem to get a lot of stick on the Internet, I've never had a problem with them.

OCUK are fine for me.

In fact I ordered a 230mm fan and mesh panel for my case on Tuesday afternoon, and it was there on Wednesday morning, standard postage.

Amazon are amazing these days, their Prime service can't be touched. They really are on the ball when it comes to customer service, delivery and returns. I've had a few items recently with same day delivery. A few weekends ago they really saved me as well as I was doing a lot of DIY at home on the Saturday to cable up and wall mount a TV, I needed a few long length power leads, CAT6 lead etc etc and they delivered it all on the Sunday (from ordering it on the Sat) allowing me to get all of the work done before returning to work on the Monday.

Agreed. Order a £8 pair of insoles on Saturday, delivered Sunday. I wouldn't know how to get a postcard delivered on Sunday for £8!

They're also who I bought my ROG Swift (and Acer Predator 4K) from. Then they came and collected the Acer when I requested a return for like £4.99.

Then there was a problem with the ROG, they sent out a new one for free (assuming I returned the old one within 30 days). Then because they didn't supply a UK cable they gave me a £50 refund lol.

I feel sorry for places like OCUK, you go to them after Amazon expecting the same kind of service (not free money, but flexibility when it comes to sorting out problems) and they just can't compete IMO.

The returns seem to have got even better more recently, the last time I returned items you can either take it to a Collect+ point or they will have DPD come and collect it the next working day all FOC and with no return admin fee etc.

Depends on the item.

I returned a motherboard recently using Collect+ which is really handy. But big things like TV/monitors/computer cases you can get a DPD collection from your home, but if the reason for return is "changed my mind" then you pay a small fee. Or you can just say it's not as described or faulty and they'll collect for free.

Please accept our sincerest of apologies,.

This item was indicating as in stock at point of order, but unfortunately we only had 3 left and as we had a high volume of orders going through at the one time it seems they were out of stock by the time your order processed,

We apologise for the inconvenience of this we are expecting more coming into stock and once received we will aim to ship to you for a delivery the following day,

No mention of them refunding my next day Saturday delivery, c***s (or when it will be in stock next)
The initial order didn't go through to their system properly to start with, I had to chase them to find out why it didn't show up (was about 20 minutes after). They must have known at that point that there was no stock, but they said nothing! Never, ever again.

Even OCUK have never been this bad (and they fucked up in a similar manner once, but they told me straight away)

Yeah I was on the site for the 1080 bang on 2, by the time i'd checked out all stock was gone. Didn't bother to tell me though, had to find out myself lol.

Well bye bye SLI. What a load of s**t that has been and too much money pee'd up the wall on a poorly supported piece of tech. Was going to wait for the Titan or Ti but I had the money so figured I'd get a 1080 now so I'd get the full six months worth out of it before I upgrade again.

Not really missing SLI if I am honest and I am impressed with how quiet my rig is at idle. From 60cm away I can't hear it at all.

Got mine from Amazon.

Kind of sad in some ways about ditching SLI. It was like 3DVision - absolutely amazing when it worked properly.

I've been using 1440p for some years and single cards have finally caught up with the resolution so it was the right time to bite the bullet.

@Toypop - I share your beliefs and your pain. From the days of trying out SLi with two 7900GTX cards, to my current quad-SLi setup - I get so frustrated about how close, yet so far the whole multi-GPU arena has faired.

Even back in 2010, it was possible to buy mobos with PCIe slots to accommodate four cards. The technogical concept has been out a hell of a lot longer. Yet why do the likes of Ubisoft INSIST on supporting single GPUs yet facilitate SLi profiles that do FA to help? Then you get smaller production teams which happily use all GPUs present and simply get on with it.

We've been promised time and time and time again about the potentency of SLi - and like lemmings, we jump off the cliff to follow it. I've gone SLi. I've gone tri-SLi, and obviously quad. The hit & miss ratio is simply far too small to justify the expense and the pissing about with drivers and settings.

I'm purely going down the single 1080 route for now. Who knows, with the new SLi bridge technology, DX12 and software house finally accepting the multi-GPU culture - then SLi 'may' have a resurgence. Until then however, I'm hanging fire. I've been there, done that and worn the bloody t-shirts far too often.

Think I've solved the issue of trying to keep the GPU cool now. Sadly the only window option (without making your own) for the prodigy is to stick a window right in front of the GPU fans, which is nice to look at but w**k for cooling.

Got a 230mm Spectre pro in there now though and that seems to be doing the trick reasonably well. Need some lighting though.

Having a quick look through their range I don't think they make what I'm looking for. Always good to have a vouched manufacturer for others though. I recently tried a Fractal Case (R5 Design I think). £69 from Amazon which was discounted I think. Supreme build quality for the money. Far better than my 540 Air, but then that's not saying that much....

This is the sort of thing I want next. Smaller footprint than the 540 Air and has the motherboard mounted flat so you don't get GPU droop. I'm unlikely to use watercooling so funny mounting is not a problem.

I asked them when the cards would be in, and if I could switch to another one..

I'm afraid that the delivery dates for these cards are subject to change and it's not possible for us to pin-point which card will arrive first. There are also a large number of back-orders for each version which need to be fulfilled and depending on the number of orders waiting it may not be in your interests to change. All we can recommend is that you wait a little while with us, we assure you that your order will be processed as quickly as possible.

They took my money so they can f**k off with telling me to be patient!

Have they actually taken the money @Cookie ? Very cheeky either way but business is business I guess.

If not you can just cancel your authorisation and they won't be able to take the money when they try. If they have already taken money then they should be in breach of contract at some point or another, regardless you can use DSR to cancel the transaction- whether you've received the item or not. Lastly, and only applicable if you paid by credit card, you can have your card provider make a claim against the vendor for 'goods not received' and you'll have the money back on your account within the week.

Money went out yesterday. Was on debit unfortunately. I'll give them til Friday.. if nothing by then I'll request a cancellation and go give them s**t on Trustpilot, they don't seem to like that

1070's are having much the same issue. Scan still have no idea when the next stock lands. NVIDIA needs to stop doing paper launches.

Stock for most of the 1070 FEs is due in tomorrow apparently, but not the Gigabyte one :(

It is annoying. If the card was likely to be delivered in August - bloody well say it. Don't fook about making dates up well beforehand.

A delivery date far off in the distance, I can cope with. A rolling ETA just annoys the piss out of me. I can't see it being a repeat of the BT fibre farce however, where the date continues to slip some 2.5 years after they first announced it where we live. :(

Did it turn up? @Cookie

I got annoyed yesterday when for the full day, the order status was changed to 'stock due today'. I lost track of how many times I pressed F5 to refresh my email and stock status.

With no update at all yesterday - even the sales staff on the phone couldn't confirm anything - last night the ETA went back to the end of the month.

If it's August - just tell me. If it's September - just tell me. Stop pissing about with the maybe/possibly/can't say/won't say bullshit. Surely they have a stock order. Surely they know at which position in that queue my order will be fulfilled? If the initial batch is 10 cards and I'm number 18 - just let me know....

Yes mate it did. Spent a few hours playing Witcher 3, looks the tits with everything on ultra!

I did a benchmark on Heaven this morning with the standard settings with my 670, 29fps average. Same test with the 1070, 93fps average
It seems to boost to 1911mhz by itself with me not touching any settings, not overclocked it yet.

Can anyone tell me if gaming laptops worth a look at? Keep seeing windows 10 will be cross platform with some Xbox games. My current laptop would probably be too slow I imagine, just some Acer cheap job which I'm reverting back to Windows 7 anyway because 10 messed it up. Horizon 3 while on a nightshift could be a winner.

In all fairness - they aren't worth it. You're paying a considerable chunk of money to have performance minimised - but even that's a loosely applied term. Additional cooling, decent batteries, larger power packs - the list goes on. Buy a top-flight new one and they shed money quicker than driving a new Range Rover out of the showroom.

That said, they make a cracking 2nd-hand buy through eBay - IF you get the spec right. MSI and Dell/Alienware do an extensive range of gaming laptops and it would be worth looking out for those. However, they are an extremely niche item and a comparable PC in terms of value, will probably still run rings around it.

One of those indulgence items that's high-value for little gain.

I ordered a FTW one 10 mins after they were to pre-order. They were due on the 17th June but apparently they haven't even gone on the production line yet lol. They've had my money since day 1 :)

FLOL. Really??!

What a piss-take. I did notice on the EVGA site that the FTW 1080 is the only one listed with two BIOSs. I wonder if one is reserved as a factory-default setting and the other BIOS there for people to tweak and mess with, until it bombs out?

I didn't even realise that the EVGA Precision Tool was on Steam? Weirdly, with 'achievements' too.

I'm pretty sure that the bottom one of these two will be pretty rare to get. :)

Bit older but definitely a Power PC as it uses f**king loads of it! lol!!!

my little cousin wanted to try PC gaming so I told him id sort him out for his Birthday! and if he likes it then we can look at building him a new machine! set myself a budget of £200 and went hunting for bargains! build came in at £190! - he already had a keyboard, mouse and monitor

his only requirement was "I want it to look cool!"

spec ended up...
Dual Socket 771 Xeon X5450 3.0GHz Quad Core
16GB DDR2 FB-Ram
Geforce GTX 560 Ti 1GB...
