The Power PC Thread [f*ck off consoles]

  Evo 5 RS
Custom loops quickly get expensive, I wouldn't like to build a £2000 PC with a custom loop, Corsair solution is best and air cool the rest (spend the money on components).

I just spent 1,800 in watercooling. Add that to 3x 780Ti superclocks, a 4960X, 32GB 1866 Dominator Platinum and a Superflower 1200W PSU and you've got one hefty bill :(

Cheers Sconey-fella-me-lad. :)

BigDave - the H100i is exactly what I have pencilled in as I like the fact it's hassle free and pre-filled, etc.

Wouldn't a current-gen i7 be better as a CPU if you're heavily involved with non-realtime rendering, etc? Or have the recent i5's come on leaps and bounds that has negated the i7's additional abilities?

Just a thought? :)

2 reservoirs or just 1? What D5 pump tops? EK ones are nice.

Just the one, the D5 twin XSPC dual bay res. Although I may throw in another one but I can't see it being an issue.

What do you do for a living Scone?

I don't know what do you do for a living scone? I'd be pretty curious to see one.

:D

I work for a photography company designing the back end of a rather large website. Most of my income for my builds come from laptop repairs. GPU reflowing, LCDs you name it I'll break it or fix it.

For folks with H100i CPU cooling, what case do you use? I'm looking for recommendations for cases that won't require modification to fit the H100i... cheers. :)

Any case that has space for a 240mm Rad will fit a H100i I think.

But the case I have is the Corsair Carbide 540. Really is a fantastic case with great airflow.

If you want I will try and get a photo of how it looks?

Please excuse the waff photos, I had to use the flash to be able to capture the contents!

You can make out where the H100i goes and fits nice and snugly up at the top.

Option 1. 6 cores for multi threaded applications hands down. It's the only sensible option :D

Thanks for the pics mate - something like that would be ideal. Appreciate your time and effort - cheers!

I agree mate. And I'd go 6 cores on the IB-Ex if cost wasn't an issue. It just bumps the price up a bit and makes it difficult to stay under 2k. I normally wouldn't mind for the sake of a few hundred quid here or there but I still have an engine build to pay for, a home gym setup to pay for, mod's for my other half's car / Christmas present and a couple of holidays in 2014. I'm not even sure if I'm going to have a job come the end of January either! LOL! Now is the time to spend I guess in that case...

I'll still probably get the 6 core though. I'll flip a coin later. :)

I'm looking to build myself a gaming PC for around £1k and looking for opinions on my choices thus far. I'm not quite in the same league as some of you guys (high rollerz...) but think I've specced a decent machine. The £1k must include Win7 64 OS and i'm after a mATX to keep it as small as possible (space is a factor).

Any opinions / comments would be very welcome.

CPU - i5 4670k
CPU Cooler - Noctua NH-L12
MB - Asus Gryphon Z87 mATX
RAM - Corsair Vengeance LP 16GB C9
Boot SSD - Samsung 840 EVO 120GB
Games HDD - WD Caviar Black 1TB
GPU - EVGA GTX770 2GB ACX
Power - Corsair RM 750W
Case - Fractal Design Arc Mini R2 mATX
Drive - Cheapest Blu Ray drive at time of order
OS - Win 7 64 Home Premium

That comes out at around £1100 on PCPartPicker, which is my upper most budget if I'm being honest.

You already have keyboard/mouse/monitor etc? If so, then that looks like a decent set up. Maybe try and find a cheaper, lower wattage psu IF your not gonna do sli in the future. Pretty sure you will be fine with a quality 600w unit for a single 770 though.

Oh, and why waste money on the OS?

Edit*. Quickly knocked this up. The Gigabyte mobo would be better imo, mainly for the superior onboard sound it has. The Silverstone case i used to own and its great, although the Fractal cases are sweet also ( i have the arc midi r2).

Ah yes, should have mentioned I have monitor etc. The Power supply is on offer at the min and is about £10 more than than the 650W equivalent, seemed daft not too.

I know you can get bootleg copies of Win 7, but I have never actually considered doing it. Surely worth the outlay to avoid torrents/scams/idiots etc?

Just ordered a Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X Rev2.0 WindForce 3X OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with Battlefield 4 PC Game for £259.99 off Overclockers.

Upgrading from a 6950, so should be a nice improvement. Couldn't say no at that price!

For those who play skyrim (on PC of course)

What textures do you use to make it pretty? The ones on the nexus forum?? I noticed I have the standard Bethesda HD dlc installed but have read how to disable that on the forum but wanted to know if those were any good?

I have been playing that a lot (again!) Recently and although its pretty on ultra I think I want to try it "prettier". Have a weird lagging issue going on with that game though...when running the graphics don't seem smooth almost seem to jump as it gets closer to the screen... I'll have to see what is causing that.

Okay so it seems it could be either the "overdrive" option in CCC, overclocking issue or mouse issue...looks like I'll have to play around.

  Evo 5 RS
Had a play with the 900D last night. 14 fans going in all :) Opting to run 3 120mm intakes at the front as a posed to a radiator for optimum air flow, and fitting a 240 at the bottom opposite the 480. Another 480 at top acting as an exhaust. Hopefully should be able to run pretty much passive with this loop, least during winter.

All black, nothing fancy. Function over form here :D (Well, besides the front but they're hidden away)

Skyrim, and the majority of Bethesda games, really don't like SLi/Crossfire setups. I get twice as much FPS using one of my 680's instead of both. Daft question but is it possible to disable one of the GPU's on a 7990 at all?

Do any of you game wirelessly? Playing CoD wireless I lag like hell to others but plays fine to me, as soon as I plugged an ethernet cable in i had stable ping and no lag at all.
Would a better wireless router do? Or is it not worth it? Ordered a longer ethernet cable anyway, but if i could still keep it wireless be better, being a laptop and alll.

Copied from OCUK

You can disable crossfire with the 7990, but you need to create a profile for the game.

Open CCC, select the 'Gaming' tab then '3D Applications Settings', click on 'Add' then select the .exe that launches your game, click the 'Open' tab at the bottom and that'll add the profile to CCC, now click on the profile and scroll down to the bottom of the screen where the Crossfire options are and you will now have the option to disable crossfire. Click 'Save' and voila, next time you run the game it'll only use 1 GPU. You can double check this when the game is running, you should have a green light on the back of the card lit up next to the 2nd GPU.

EDIT: Also if you want to go back to xfire, just click on the profile again and select 'Default' and make sure frame pacing is on. Or if you've finished with it just delete it.

Give that a whirl rich.

Just had a really weird error from my mobo. I ran Windows Hardware Tester to check the ratings etc.

Then on restarting the PC it wouldn't go past the BIOS without me loading optimised defaults due to hardware changes (which there weren't any).

I did this, reset and re-entered all my O/C BIOS settings. Now in playing around I can hold a 4.4Ghz overclock with 1.275 VCore and not 1.3VCore anymore. It used to BSOD at anything less than 1.3 and after 15 mins of AIDA testing it was still going ok with averaging late 70's in the temps. I am majorly confused, is it possible for my BIOS to have been updated without me telling it too? That is the only explanation I have for this weird event. I am also running less VRing and VRIN Override than before as well for a stable O/C.

Wireless and online gaming generally don't go hand in hand. Stick to cable, but then again, if you don't notice any lag and opponents do, then it may work in your favour, i.e, harder for them to hit you if your clipping all over the gaff.

Tried to install Flight Simulator X the other day. Of course, I forgot to turn auto updates off after replacing the HDD, so it decided to restart halfway through the install.

Now I've uninstalled, reinstalled, repaired, patched and cursed FSX to hell, but it's f**king still broken. Just CTD's while trying to load up.

Been through the registry with CCleaner and deleted everything I could find relating to FSX, but no joy.

It used to work :dapprove: Was great maxxed out.

Maximising rad space. Cheeky shot of the bottom. 480mm (bottom) > 240mm (bottom) > 240mm (front) > pump / res > 480mm top > CPU > GPUs

Still plenty room for the PSU :D
