The Power PC Thread [f*ck off consoles]

LED lit :)

lol, glad I'm not the only one thinking that! I originally started doing mine that way (although they were sleeved) then realised my mistake and switched it all around.

Looks good other than that though mate.

  Evo 5 RS
lol too much effort! I've got braiding to fit to them. I might get around to it at some point. I was thinking as well instead getting the mid plate and drilling a hole for the QDC? I quite like being able to see the PSU lit and rads though

  Evo 5 RS
Niiice :)

Yeah I'm hoping this will be a step up, not that the Analogue Kaves are bad, but I've had them a fair old time now :). Also bought the Razor 360 controller, which was a bit of an impulse buy, but it looks the mutts :D

You talking about the Razer Onza or the Sabertooth?

I had the Onza and straight out of the box it barely worked. They're infamous for having a trigger problem and it was so annoying. Basically the triggers didn't work properly and would flicker on and off :dapprove:

Those Kaves by the way, do you have to use their supplied USB sound card for the 5.1 to work? Would make your Soundblaster Z redundant. It's the problem I have currently with the Siberia Elites. If I want all the flashy lights and 5.1 I have to use their sound card but I have a SB Z same as you.

EDIT: Just read that the Kaves have a built in 5.1 sound card.

  Evo 5 RS
Yeah, the sound card was another thing that drew me to it being built in. I don't have a Z any more. Was made redundant by my Tri SLi array lol. Can probably fit one in now mind you, but I'll see what these are like.

Controller is the Sabertooth. Build quality seems nice, will have to give it a go tonight.

So... as I and many suspected... Mantle looks to have overhyped (if early indications are anything to go by). For the people that really care about this stuff (i.e. generally the enthusiasts who have put serious money into their systems) the gains will be minimal, possibly negligible, at best. Ok, I know it's early days but I was kind of expecting something more significant to be honest...

I have had a wee laugh at how some of the AMD users have been bigging it up as though it's going to be best thing since sliced bread. Seems that it is beneficial in certain CPU limited situations, which is normally overcome for the most part by overclocking the CPU anyway. So in two way Crossfire you'll see a certain percentage of gain when it's CPU limited, but for people running one GPU you're rarely ever CPU limited.

We'll see anyway, DICE's testing is ridiculously timid considering they're using stock CPU clocks, so all they're showing is Mantle removing a CPU bottleneck, which is all well and good but it's not exactly breath taking. It's going to take months and months before any one game takes good use of the lesser overheads, and even then the games will still be 'bound' by DirectX.

I still foresee OpenGL coming into it's own rather than Mantle ever becoming anything near mainstream. AMD keep stressing that it's not tied to it's GNC architecture, yet currently it does not work on other vendor hardware...so what use is it to anyone.

Proof? You can't say that and not link any articles :p
Sorry mate! Need to know and all that ;) LOL! And all you need to know is it's underwhelming from what I've seen. On a serious note, there are some early figures / benchmarks now surfacing and I believe the Mantle-enabling driver is due for release in the coming days, too. Scone's post pretty much covers it though.

In other hot air news, I thought this was dead in the water but it would appear MS have posted a blog.

https://blogs.windows.com/windows/b...-enables-optimized-pc-gaming-experiences.aspx

Sounds a lot like a different take on Carmack's Mega Textures for OGL. Note this will also be adaptable on XboxOne. So much for AMD's Mantle's 'closer' to the metal Mantle helping out gamers.
This is a really neat feature and it's a shame it couldn't have been done for earlier versions of DirectX API (or earlier versions of Windows, not just 8.1 onwards). It's effectively opening up the virtual memory / paging system of the target hardware to the developers. Such access to the hardware allows the developer the ability to more efficiently implement techniques such as 'megatexture' (and others). Implemented properly, there is potential for decent performance gains by careful management and handling of resources through utilisation of these new features in the API. The less data that needs to be shifted to the GPU (and the less state changes, etc.) the better the performance.

anyone know where i could get the IO sheild for an asus z78I-pro motherboard

it's running fine without it but would finish it off if i had it lol

Currently toying with the idea of selling my 7990 and going 2x 290 after seeing the prices of 7990's on the bay I could make a tidy profit and it would be a cheap upgrade to the 290's.....then again it is still a monstrous card and I have no real need to sell.

Decisions decisions....!

I have 2x 290, they certainly cope with everything I throw at it!

Though I dont use the 2nd 290 at all right now, or even the first one really as they're mining most of the time!

Well I got my third Hydro 580 the other day and got it plumped in but switched off, managed to order the cable kit direct from Corsair (USA) so should all be sorted within a week hopefully.

  Turbo'd MX-5 MK4
Silent_Scone what tubing are you using? I'm thinking of taking the opportunity whilst messing around the with GPUs to switch over from clear to solid colour tubing as I can see the clear has discoloured now.

Nice, I'm up and running on the three cards now:

But I've ordered some correct sized Bitspower SLI (D-Plug) fittings for the cards and decided on Blood Red Primochill Tubing, so it'll be having a complete drain and re-fit probably next weekend. I've got to switch out all the cabling for the Corsair sleeved stuff, although I am in two minds about this as the Corsair sleeving is nowhere near as good as the MDPC stuff.

Cheers Wilkeh ^ :D

Nice Gareth. What sort of ambient case temps do you get? I seriously need a side intake on this. Hopefully going to cut it up tomorrow and fit one. case temp sensor is reporting 36ishC underload and water hits 40C. But all the hot air getting sucked out the top rad goes past the CPU and causes temps to inflate. Hopefully a big fat old fan on the window will help

  Turbo'd MX-5 MK4
I don't have any sensors inside the case so I've no idea tbh, but I've got the three AirFlow fans on the front of the case so it should be fine, I don't worry about monitoring water temp anymore, on heavy load the GPUs seem to be topping out at around 52c with the GPU loop fans on full speed.

  Evo 5 RS
Mine tops out at around 43c ish when proper going for it. your case temps are probably ok as you've got a front intake for cool air. I don't, which is why I'm fitting the 230mm fan :)

Okay so I'm completely out of date with the hardware side of things now and I've got a friend asking what the best pre built rig to buy for around £500-£550 would be to be used for gaming etc.

Ideas are needed.

£500 won't get your friend a very good gaming rig these days... would a console suit their needs any better? If your friend is looking to play modern games at a decent resolution then that budget will evaporate pretty quickly I think.

To give you some idea as to what's available...

EDIT: Has anyone played Outlast on PC? Worth a punt at 7 quid from Steam?
