The Power PC Thread [f*ck off consoles]

  FF 182
:banghead: That psu is garbage, double 12v rails is not what you want, trust me.

You dont need 850w man. 750w is giving you plenty of headroom, even 650w is enough if its a good psu.

That XFX one i linked is a high quality power supply, you would be far wiser spending a bit more on a quality unit, rather than skimping out on a unbranded piece of s**t.

  FF 182
The XFX is better than that Corsair unit. The Corsair one is a rebranded CWT psu, which are no where near as good as Seasonic. For a fiver more i'd go for the XFX one anyday.

Im getting this PSU (well I have it in my "list" on Ebuyer) May well "upgrade" to a 850W version which is about 30-40 quid more.

This is pretty much my list of stuff for the "new" pc

Split between Ebuyer and OC as certain bits were a LOT cheaper on Ebuyer..an extra £100 "spare"...also some consumables not added into the equation, things like extra fans, compression fittings etc.

Still need to get a Keyboard of some description to replace my rather old standard DELL one I have been using for years. Sidewinder X4? Although thats out of stock on Overclockers and £70 odd on other places (was only £34.99 on Overclockers until it went out of stock)

Split your order if some stuff is cheaper, assuming you get free delivery?

Think I saved ~£40 by split ordering from OcUK/Scan when I ordered mine.

I'd still recommend Corsair/Seasonic/XFX over OCZ imo.

  FF 182
Yup, OCZ psu's in general are pretty poor.

Still going for the Elysium? I had one, won in a comp, and while it has bags of room, its a pretty ugly case imo, not the best made thing either.

  Bumder With A Buffer
Admitedly I was torn between the OCZ and the Antec...Have used the Antecs loads and been happy with them.

Yeah still stuck on the Elysium. The 2013 "updates" seem a bit better then when they first bought it out. I don't know why I just love the size of the thing. I have bought a desk JUST for the PC

  FF 182
Antec make some good units .

The Corsair 750D is cheaper than the Elysium! Looks far better IMO and can hold 360mm, 240mm radiators easy.

But your call i guess :p Whatever you go with, good luck with it, should be a capable build for a few years.

I just got that graphics card a few days ago seems great but it's gone up in price I paid 180for it

Right gonna have a look for a corsair psu and spend money wisely this time thanx a lot folks

  Bumder With A Buffer
One more thing, why OCUK? I find that Scan are generally cheaper than them.

I haven't fully checked but but scan don't do some of the bits that are in the ocuk basket. plus taking into accou free postage on ocuk It's cheaper then scan

Not so powerful now,

i7 950 @ 4.4ghz
16gb ram
2x 22" 120hz monitors (samsung 700d's) + 22" monitor (need a third bro)
Samsung 830 256gb
7970 Lighting @ various stupid clocks (had 7970 crossfire but micro stutter on x58 chipset was a b**ch)
Asus Xonar Xense (soundcard)

Will be upgrading when the new Intel CPU's come out, gonna go fking mental this time - it's currently all watercooled but tempted to go for an SR-X or something stupid like that.

p.s. what games do you play Roy?

Why do you only use the SSD? Its better if you use both an SSD and a mechanical hard drive.

Can't see the point imo, I have a ton of hdd's (also), just didn't list them in the post.

If I really need more speed I have RAMDisk available, but in all honesty is there any point? SSD is fast enough :p

Also I'm now in a debacle again after properly looking at the 750d case and watching some reviews.

My main concern is not not being able to fit a dual bay res in the front, fan controller and an optical drive (could go usb version)along with a 360mm rad in the roof.

So you need a case with 4 drivebay slots?

I'd say go for a normal res (or one that sits on the pump), the bay ones tend to cause vibrations, but its all personal preference!

That would reduce the amount of bay slots you need also then!

Why buy 2 7950's when you can buy a 7990 with a PSU for £480...

The combination of using an SSD as a boot drive and using HDDs for storage. Means you can store more games, Media files and software on your system. I have a 128gn crucial SSD with 2 Seagate 2TB HDDs. Means my computer runs faster and i can have more games and movies on my system.

Even so, an SSD alone will still be quicker, I run most of my main stuff on my SSD + keep the storage on my HDD's.

Pretty much as you said above, I just done use it as a Cache SSD.

  Turbo'd MX-5 MK4
Mine too, SSD for the OS & Programs, SSD for my iTunes library, 10K rpm drives for CD & Origin games and 2 x 1TB HDDs for my steam library. I then have servers with their own storage for a home file share, one of the servers also has a Revo PCI-E SSD for some of my VMs so they respond ultra-fast.

I could do with some of them tbh, but loading times don't really bother me in any of the games I play.

  Bumder With A Buffer
I put games on my SSD....Skyrim and Fallout seemed to load a LOT quicker on that then on the PS3 I was used too. Although Crysis 2 was on my HDD and that seemed quick.

I think im sold on that 7990 and PSU combo. Too good a deal to pass on I think

2 Things im still unsure on is Mobo..

Cant decide between ASRock Z77,

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-064-AK&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2261

MSI Z77A-GD65

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-199-MS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2261

Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-389-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2261

Kinda wanna go with the MSI or the gigabyte as it will fit my Blue and Black theme...anyone used any of the above? Also still undecided on the case

Hmm, changing mobo? Upgrading cpu too or? Just wondered as its an older socket now :)

If it's any use I have a MSI Z77A-G45 I'm gonna be putting up for sale pretty much any time now, it has a celeron in it currently - used it for graphics processing. (less than 6m old)

Was gonna go with a 1155 Socket with a 3570k overclocked. Z77 would meet my needs for a while I thought. Didn't see what I would gain putting an i7 in considering most games haven't utilized hyper threading as far as I was aware...therfore for now an i5 would suffice

An i7 officially increases your E-penis by about 2 inches though. :)

Good choice on the 7990 though, it's such a good price.

Quite simply, the most powerful graphics card on the market, the Radeon HD 7990 streaks ahead of Titan by marrying up two Radeon HD 7970 GHz Editions onto one PCB. The result is unparalleled performance. A full list of specs is below, but we should point out that our XFX review model actually boosts up to 1050MHz - so a small level of additional boost over the reference model.

I know Asrock have upped their game in the last couple of years, but i'd still choose the MSI or Giga board over the Asrock one. Probably the MSI would edge it personally, never had a problem with any MSI stuff.

Watch out for ridiculous coil whine on the 7990 though, apparently they are bad for it.
