think gearbox is fuked! advice

was picking up my sister tonight from her mates, she stays in a farm! very bumpy road and think i might have caught the ground, was pulling out the junction onto the road when i got a loud clunk, gearstick moved a good bit and exhaust got much louder.

crawled home and checked it at home, on the gearbox mount, the bolt that bolts onto the gearbox was wripped clean out!, bolt is fine but its just slipping when trying to bolt it back into the gearbox does this mean it needs a new gearbox, or atleast the gearbox re built with a new caseing?

might take that gearbox of yours if you still have it if its more hastle than its worth to fix

take the battery out, get a jack under the box, remove battery tray and mount etc and inspect,

you have to hold the underside of that long bolt/bush with a spanner and then tighten the top nut up, otherwise it will just spin

has the little black box at the back of the engine (cover the ecu loom) fallen off by chance?

little black box that covers the ecu loom fell off ages ago how is this related? cheers mate

not sure if it makes any difference but it has a 2.0 16v 172 engine mount on it not the standard one

yep gearbox mount from a 172, different but similar apparently stronger, does look it, i bought it for powerflex bushes in it and never got round to fitting them, ended up fitting it with standard bushes

does the bolt go thru a hole into a bolt or does it screw into the gearbox, seems to me like it screws into the gearbox off the top of my head but too dark to check.

there's a nut, threaded bar up through an ali spider mount, rubber bush which goes onto battery tray mount, then the top nut goes on

so top nut is eather fuked or fell off? bolt had dropped right down and fell out so i assume it just fell off?

will check it tomorrow, but everyone knows im talking about the lower gearbox dog bone mount here and not the mount under the battery?! im getting confused lol

ah i dunno then, box has a bracket on it, sure one is tapped into bell housing and other is bolted straight thru.. (ma memory is shoite.)

then there is a bolt and nut that goes thru one ond of the dogbone mount and the other end gets bolted to the underside of the car thru the rubber bit.

ive got a haynes manual for it

aye 1 end bolts to car other end bolts to box, the bolt onto teh car is fine its solid its the 1 onto the box thats fuked mate said with a lot of hastle we could probably sort it but likely it needs a new box and probably worth it since its crunching into 3rd a lot now.

been all over stirling looking for a 1.6 16v and not one in stirlin, no 1.4s or DCis eather!!!! all 1.2s saw a black 172, going to get mum to phone round for insurance quotes but likely a no no

Took me ages to find a 1.6 near enough to me, weren't that many on autotrader for the whole country when I was looking for mine.

Might be worth chucking a new(er) box in it unless you want shot of it instead of repairing it.

need to read up on engine conversion insurance because i really dont want a new car, looked all over the place and theres none that appeal to me, for the £6,000 im going to spend on a new car i could build and insure a monster of a 1.6 16v conversion

Try insuring it as a kit car.

K4M isnt great but if im replacing the engine i fancy something to keep me content untill i get my years ncb, thinking of just puting a new gearbox on it tho and changing head gasket, rocker cover gasket and cambelt tho and anything else that needs done just to last me for a while! not sure if i feel up to a full rebuild yet!!

Just stick a second hand engine and box it much cheaper and eaiser than strip down.

Kit car insurance is cheaper.

i put a box in mine, got it from matt at rsb.. it's a prett big job but do-able with a reasonable tool kit.

my tool kit isnt the best but probably up to the job, my mate had the box split from the engine when doing my clutch so he can always help too if i get stuck!

next job is the rocker cover gasket, anyone know how easy or hard these are to do on the 1.2 16v engine?

i need to strip my tb, new sump, new exhaust, new door handle and new recliner handle. gear linkage is getting fixed 2moro and i done a wheel bearing last week.

oh and my discs are a bit scored an i want to change my brake fluid!!

I HAVE LOVE FOR RENOS!! lol
