Tightening Driveshaft nut

  S2000
I was just wondering what will be the case if you 1) overtighten the hubnut on your ...car? or 2) undertighten the hubnut?

I was justwondering as I have recently replaced my hub but don't know if the nut has been done too tight ot too loose.

I know I mentioned this in another thread a few minutes ago but I'm needing an answer asap so made up a thread specifically for this question.

Too loose and you wont have the correct preload on the bearing, ie there will be slight play.

Too tight and it will lead to premature wear.

All the ones i've done have been done up fookin tight and i've never suffered a problem.

OK i'll do that (see if one of my mates has a torque wrench that'll go to a high enough torque.

In the meantime will I do any damage driving the car if it's slightly too tight or loose?

Hadn't seen this response when I posted my last reply. I think it's probably about right TBH but just don't want to damage anything.

Don't think I can get a hold of a torque wrench that will go to that sort of torque actually without buying one which I don't want to do for just this one job.

Do you reckon a local garage would probably tighten it to the correct torque for a few quid?

I did mine without a torque wrench, just did it fooking tight, my torque wrench is about 30Nm short, so i did it to max setting and then did it 1/4 turn more with breaker bar, this is the last time ihad the hub off to change the driveshaft

I just don't want to risk f**king anything good and proper as I only have a torque wrench up to 110Nm so I can even really guess at how tight it should be. I'll try and get it tightened properly by a garage tomorrow.

I've just come off the phone to a garage and the guy said that I should just tighten it up as tight as possible and that would be OK.

He said the only time that wouldn't be the case would be if it was a tapered bearing. He checked and said that he didn't think the clios was a tapered bearing but I just wanted to check if anyone knows if it's a tapered bearing or not????

Should I just tighten it as much as possible and will it be OK?

250NM or 185lbf for the Nyloc type nut
280NM or 207lbf for the self locking nut with integral washer.
You should renew the nut ever time not stick it back on. However I'm supid and cheap and have just made do with some locking compound on the nut and there no trouble with it. When i had the clutch chnage the mechanic didn't chnage the nut and I went on track days etc and there was no thread locking compound with no trouble.

Thanks mate. Do you know if it's a tapered bearing??

It's just because I don't have a torque wrench that can go up to that sort of torque and the garage was saying that as long as it's not a tapered bearing then I should just tighten is as much as it will go.
