Timing Belt & Dephaser Change - A couple of Questions

I have searched for a while and I cannot find anything (certainly recently) that gives me the info I am after, I have 2 questions,

1. Is there anyway to tell if a timing belt has been done (I don't have any paperwork but I have been told it was done in 2019 which is c15k ago)
2. What is the expected cost for doing the change (inc dephaser and water pump) on a 2005 182?

Given the lack of history im tempted to just get it done just for my own peace of mind.

Get it done and make sure to get OE aux belt & tensioner as that’s most likely to go and destroy the timing belt.

I’d figured £500min so in the ball park. Was secretly hoping it’d be about £300 ha.

Get a Megane keyed crank pulley fitted while you're there and if you're looking to keep it long term maybe a timing belt protector from APMotorsport (will need modifying to fit the lower timing cover)

Such a pain in the clios ass the belts. Often overlooked or done cheap at night.

At least with the prices today the belts isn't like 50% of some clios value lol.

I'd email R-Sport and ask about the cup racer one that was made for the mk2 in the first place.

RPD do have the déphaser and belt kit on offer the moment with £180 off. Tempted to just get that kit.

I’ll look into the other parts you mentioned now as well.

Just a word of warning, if you look to sell this and it's not done by someone reputable or a 'specialist' it won't go in your favour. 😅

Make sure they use the genuine renault timing tools, or kiss goodbye to 40 bhp.

I'd just go to Diamond Motors, parts plus the proper tools and the price isn't much different.

It's a bit of a trek from North Yorkshire but you can make a day of it.

I have the one from R-Sport and it's from a mk3. The mk2 cup racer never had one.

My belts due again soon

A little extra protection to stop the pulley slipping, although it never should if done properly.

The pulley has a keyway already machined but no woodruff key, so you could just have a piece made but it's easy enough to fit the pulley with an integral key.

To be fair they’re very reputable around here, they run races cars and the owner races in the type r series, I was supposed to be going along last year to help him but covid happened.

It’s not a specialist Renault garage, but they really know what they’re doing he may well say I’m better off taking it to a specialist if he felt that was the best thing, he’s told me where to take cars before on occasion when I’ve needed a really specialist jon doing.

So looking at their website they suggest its going to cost c£900 for the belt, dephaser, and water pump, not including the aux belt. So basically £1k all in. ouch.

You could always ask if you can provide your own parts?

Get the waterpump done tho, silly not to on a car that age.

While you're costing this up, have a look at the lower pulley, the one attached to the crank. If the rubber between the inner and outer sections is perishing or cracking, that will also need replacing (about £100 from memory).
The other point about using a specialist is that the rocker cover doesn't have a gasket so is sealed with some loctite gunk that takes a bit of getting used to. And if it leaks then its a 4 hour job to replace.

Yeah, to be honest I think I will just bite the bullet and get it all done, at least then im comfortable for a while, i'll just live on beans on toast for a month.

The only thing im debating is the dephaser as its making no noise, but for the sake of £200 might just get it done anyway.

Maybe its Covid. Still seems really expensive to be honest, but a new engine / engine rebuild would probably cost more so on balance its probably a bargain, and I do want the associated peace of mind and start to build the history, see if I can't keep the value high!

Also might be worth getting a quote off Birchdown, just to see how they compare. Their website still lists 2013 prices.

The issue I have is limited history so I just don't know when any of this was done, I have been told the best was done in 2019 but I doubt the water pump and dephaser was done. While i'm getting a cold sweat thinking about the cost I just feel like getting it all done now gives me the peace of mind, then I can decide what needs doing when the next belt replacement coms around.
