Tim's Forged LY R26

I thought it's about time I started a project/progress thread for my R26 as I've had it almost 18 months now. I've never had a project thread before mainly because I couldn't be bothered and never been one to seek approval from my peers. I enjoy reading Nickson's and Poobah's Megane threads so as a few plans are starting next week I'll keep a diary as well.

A couple of months ago I was considering selling as the big service is due later this year and it's not 100% cosmetically. Despite all the costs on the horizon though I love it, best car I've ever owned (only my 4th car), so it's staying!

Anyway to start the thread I'll go back to November 2010 when I bought the R26 and hopefully by the weekend we'll be up to present day :)

November 2010

Bit about my Monaco 172 first.

My Monaco 172 had to go, it was a shed, had a healthy appetite for oil drinking it like it was tea or coffee, basically in 35k miles and 3.5 years I had killed it. It even spat oil out on Matt@TDF's rolling road

Final spec of my 172 was:
JMS remap
JMS induction kit
JMS matched inlets
Ktec stealth exhaust
Silenced decat
VMaxx coilovers
Ktec uprated engine mounts
DS2500 front and rear pads
Tarox G88 grooved front discs
Goodridge brake lines
Cup spoiler, 307 splitter and Mazda 3 Mps aerial
OZ F1 wheels with R888s

Problems when I traded it in for £1800 were:
Oil leaks from bottom end and rocker cover (drank 10 litres in last 12 months)
Oil leak from the gearbox
Dephaser rattling
Laquer peeling on bonnet and front bumper
Wheels kerbed
Xenon lights clouded up and condensation inside
Aircon not working as radiator leaking
Brake pads very low
Rear shocks leaking
Rear numberplate light didn't work
Seat didn't match as one had blue Renaultsport writing and other silver

As you can see from that list of problems I did well to get £1800 for trade in and £900 for parts (still got the decat and engine mounts to sell lol) :p

I looked at a two R26's, a 2007 Ultra Red 07 plate and a 2007 Liquid Yellow 57 plate. Decided on the LY as it was same price, lower mileage 27k versus 34k, 6 months younger still in warranty and most importantly had xenon lights which were an optional extra.

It was a two hour drive to see the LY up in Lichfield just off the M6 toll but worth it. It drove superbly so much quicker and more refined than my 172. Part of me wanted to keep the 172 but deep down knowing the problems it had to go and I was happy with the trade in value. I offered him best cash price and got a hundred quid off so put a £500 deposit down straight away.

I collected the car the following Saturday on 27th November (bit sad I remember dates like that tbh). Drive home was good, felt great knowing this fantastic standard LY R26 was mine, tried out the effortless power on the M6 Toll and my favourite road :D

Once home I even washed it which is very very unlike me, more to come tomorrow....

Nice one Tim.

I think I'll start one for mine, even though it'll be mostly little touches.

Love the R26's... If they weren't too big for me I'd have one. Lol

Forgot to about a couple more problems with my Monaco

Cracked piston rings causing oil to come out the exhaust
Cat was leaking because I didn't use a new cat to manifold gasket

They're about same size as a 197/200 so guessing you're talking about reaching the pedals ;)

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

Sorry getting this up to date didn't go to plan.

April 2012

This morning I took the R26 to Alexander Autos near Basingstoke to get the aftermath of Summer Performance Action Day at Castle Combe repaired. He's going to take the bumper right back to remove the chips and crazing, repair the crack using a special tool that puts metal pins inside the plastic then paint.

The off was caused by the backend stepping out which I corrected (sort of ) then the car gripped sending me off. It was just bad luck that two traffic cones happened to be where my Megane punted me off. My first reaction was "oh s**t" I've destroyed front end so I was relieved the damage was minimal. My excuse is the Hankook RS2 tyres I was running just aren't good enough in the wet as you can see and hear they were struggling for grip before then.

Here's the video skip to 5mins30 to see the off.

Pictures I took last night show it's in quite a state. I think its had a poor respray before as some of the paint missing was like that before the incident so I wasn't that pissed off about the damage. Have to thank Fletcher for helping me fix the lower grille (it flew out a few times lol) using the tried and trusted ghetto cable tie method :)

I pick it up on Friday so looking forward to it being in mint condition as it is a bit depressing at moment.

Next update will be my interesting results at the Cliosport Surrey Rolling Road Day in January 2011 :)

Will look forward to seeing this painted and your opinion, the LY R26 I'm looking at ATM has a scratch that I'd want painting but I wasn't sure if the color could be matched properly?

It depends where it needs painting really. You can get away with it on the bumpers but anywhere else would need blending in which is difficult/expensive.

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

Dummy Spat ;), only joking pal. Looks nice fella

Cheers. Think I was walking into the infield to wait to get recovered but the marshall shouted to remove the cone and get going. I was unimpressed with the marshalling as it wasn't safe to be trying to remove cones.

That's a bit of a bugger! Too fast for you Tim?

No, just cold tyres with no grip on a wet and slippy track.

And if you skip to 10.57 you will see the grill on the side of the track briefly. And Fletch and Tim roaring off after my first lap :(

All the time you've spent chasing me and Jord round in the past without any mishaps, then you have a pathetic little one like that!

Well it's the first on camera, I 360'd my 172 through Copse at the Silverstone RS Day in 2010. I probably should have just let it spin but decided to correct it as it felt like it was going to roll over and Fletcher might have collected me if I had spun.

It was pathetic but that's definitely down to the Hankook RS2's being crap in the wet, never had the back step out like that before or since.

tell you something mate - i wouldnt have been walking around outside with them cars flying past...and at that location on track!

That should of been a red flag to the session. Who was the day with?

It was the Castle Combe Summer Performance Action Day, it's similar to TRAX and FCS where you have 15 minute sessions.

I agree that it should have been red flagged.

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

just in time for the spring performance car action day lol

You going?

Yes, I'm going but I won't be on risking it on track.

Funny thing is I'm insured with Greenlight now and only track they don't cover is Castle Combe....I can't think why :p

Are you going with Meganesport?

LOL. Brilliant picture!

Should look ace when it's back from the bodyshop, Tim. Can't wait to see it.

I can't wait either as I'm having to use my Dad's Saab 9-3 estate for work this week. I'll get plenty of pictures up :)
