too much oil??

  mk 2 172
rite where do i start...

basicaly noticed my 172 sounds a bit rough almost like tappets need adjusting, sound bice at back of car but a tad noisy at front nothing to noticeable. i cam be herd more with window down in built up area where it echo's around 2-3k. any idea wot this could be. ive serched this an dseems quite a common problem but cant realy find a answer for me.

maybe its just me being fussy. this being my 1st 172 im not sure if its normal

i checked engine oil levil and its slightlyabouve the max levil on dipstick (about3/4mm above max on dipstick) is this a problem?

sorry if its a silly question but my mechanical knowledge is rubbish!

thanks

To much oil isnt always a good thing as it puts excessive pressure on oil seals and gaskets. You sure you were not on a hill or slope when taking that reading? and did you check that reading more than once?

Back to your questions...the engines by default are not TAPPY as such, they are quite whiney due to the belt setup from what ive seen on most (even ones with new belts). Could be seomthing else thats vibrating causing the noise. Heat shields etc...

Using cheap oil doesnt help tappets...maybe try using a FSynthetic 5/40w oil will help?

3-4mm is nothing to worry about, on my old 172 the injectors used to click like crazy which sounded like the top end so make sure it isn't that. Other than that oil/filter change with some good 5w40 (ie silkolene pro s,etc) is about all you can do without major work.

Tappets/lifters are non adjustable as they're hydraulic and pump up on oil pressure hence wanting decent enough oil of the correct grade.

Depends what grade oil it is. Where was it changed? The engines are whiney and what some people would call tappety but the tapping at idle tends to be the injectors.

Do a search for dephaser pulley problems and check it doesnt sound like that.
