Top Gear online 197 Cup review

  Mark 1 Clio V6
I disagree.
The Cup chasis is the one you want.

I knew as soon as I saw a 197 that I would have one, but I also knew that I would wait until they had bettered it with the Cup chasis.
I am in no way mocking ff 197 owners - I too have been one of those annoyed after buying a car only for Renault to bring out a better variant within 6 weeks of ownership.

One day Renault will release the car everyone wants straight away instead of annoying owners of the original with special editions and cup chasis'.

I also disagree about the overall package of a 172/182 being better, but then again all current 172/182 owners will say that won't they. It is after all car owner prerogative - mine is best.

The 197 is far better looking, better built and just as quick.
Hopefully will be better in the reliability stakes and is far safer.
Okay it's not that econmical, but it's a hot hatch - if you want economy get a diesel Golf!

I loved my 172, but the 197 is evolution and a far better prospect in all departments.

Its an Evolution yes.....for the best..possibly not.

Im a Renaultsport fan period. I'd have the 197 if it was lighter and not as thirsty.
My Cup is lighter, and not as thirsty and its pretty much spot on in the handling department....ok its not as well put together nor does it have the toys and fancy bells and whistles the 197 has.
But i get a bigger bang for my buck.

But at the end of the day, ask a Williams owner which he'd prefer out of a Williams and a 172 and he'll prob say the Williams for driving enjoyment.
Yeah its older but i think most hot hatch enthusiast deem the old school as purer.

No one can tell you your car is poorer than another if you enjoy it for what it does and it puts a smile on your face.
