Topping up mobile broadband

When topping up pay as you go mobile broadband for a tablet, is the voucher you ask for the same as a mobile phone one?

Basically what do i ask for?

The woman in Tesco's didn't have a clue. Banging my head off a brick wall trying to register pay by card online with Three

Normally you go online with said provider and register your sim then you can pay online or via your phone.

That's what I used to do.

I'll bob into a phone shop over the weekend. Bought a top up voucher but it won't activate and no joy trying or checking to activate sim. Bloody technology !!
