torrent question

ive just starting on the whole torrent thing, i use utorrent at the moment with tiscali upto 8mb broadband.

im just wondering if there are any tips to speed it up, cos sometimes im getting 0.5kbs. I hear tiscali put a cap on their peak times which are 6pm till 11pm would that greatly reduce the speeds?

ive also noticed if i increase my uploads it down loads faster? is that correct?

If your using a router/firewall you will need to open the ports. There should be a thing near the bottom or utorrent that tells you if your connection is fine or if you have a NAT/firewall problem. Also, try changing the default port to something else and turn on encryption to help with caps.

As the man above said. Indeed by the very nature of Torrents your download will improve if you're also uploading at a decent rate too, although not always applicable.

Look for torrents with a good ratio (more seeds + less leechers = more speed).

Plenty of uTorrent tuning guides, search google and ye shall find.

Use the speed guide. Go to the website that tests your speed and do a few different ones. The figure you need is the upload speed. Take an average from the few you have done and select the closest setting to that in the drop down menu on the speed guide next to connection type. It will set all the limits right for you. If you set it too high it will probably slow you internet down a lot of bring it to a standstill. Also enable encryption if you think you isp may be blocking it.

Then go to options---preferences and go to connection and enable upnp and nat-pmp.

Now look at the bottom middle of the screen. Hopefully you will have green sign.


What do the Network Status lights mean (

The green light means all is OK (ports are forwarded and you are receiving incoming connections)

The yellow light means that you have no current incoming connections. If this never turns green, this means that your port is not forwarded. The best way to check is with the µTorrent port checker, found in the Speed Guide. If the port checker says your port is open, then everything is most likely fine.

The red light means that µTorrent was unable to bind a listening socket. Most likely, this means a firewall is blocking it. It's also possible that another torrent client is using this port, which will require you to change ports, or not run both clients at the same time


That will usually help. If it goes slow after that it could be because your isp is putting a cap on bandwith usage at the time or because the peers are just slow.

Tiscalli suck major ass b****cks

had loads of problems with speeds, if you carry on downloading during the peak hours they get arsey and move you to a server which is heavly loaded meaning slow browsing and downloading.

Torrents often start slow then get faster and faster for me. Not sure why, but it's nearly always the case. Just grind it out, by 75% it'll be going like a train!

3kb/s is still very slow. I have 2 torrents going at the moment at a total of 60kb/s and have had up to 300kb/s between 2 before. When i used to use BitTorrent in stead of Utorrent i had like total of 500kb/s once as it would run like 10 torrents at once. But BitTorrent used to go really slow during the day, the only time it worked well was overnight where as Utorrent works well all day but unfortunately mine can only handle 2 at a time.

But it also depends a lot on what you are downloading, if you are doing something that has like 3 other people seeding/peering then it is going to go very slow usually.

Thats because it is picking up more peers as its going along so by the end you will have alot more than you do at the start usually. and you might get lucky and have a fast peer come on who you can download really fast from.
