Trackcar project " Another low budget toy"

  53 Clio's & counting
Cheers Porkie. We had looked at the Federals and will probably go for them in the future. The T1R were £35 a corner so that swayed the decision to get us going and see how we get on on track. We are both trackday novices so hopefully they will do us fine for a while until we see where we are at (hopefully not spinning off into oblivion haha). Thanks for all the advice from everyone, its much appreciated :)

Ah sorry, I missed you guys are new to track days - having a less grippy tyre is a good thing, gives you a chance to learn the car at a lower speed - in fact on track I much prefere road tyres - I am kinda in the minority but a tyre like a Yoko Prada or even better a G/year Eagle F1 (RIP in 195/50/15 size :( ) or Pirelli PE2 I find are great fun, as you can still carry decent enough speed but with enough adjustability to really get the car moving around under you and having fun.

After all, it's all about having fun, notbeing the fastest :)

Thanks for the info Russ, thats the whole reason for getting the car in the first place, to have plenty of fun and learn along the way :)

Managed to get the car out and wash the dust off her today. Possible trip to Knockhill on sat. :)

looking great! me and a mate are doing the same on a cup on a budget for track use. we haven't started doing any work on it so your thread is great inspiration.
did you get seat subframes made in the end?

Hi roncee, cheers for the comments. Good to hear you are doing the same sort of thing, you will enjoy it. There is plenty on the forum to help you along the way. Keep an eye out on the for sale section on here and other sites, but be quick, if your not fast your last on here, we missed out on a cheap strut brace the other day and a few sets of wheels over the weeks haha. We have been lucky with quite a few of the parts and have really stuck to our budget.

Yes we sorted out the subframes. Tommy got the material and took the measurements and my dad welded them up for us. Another decent amount saved and spent on taxing the car instead, robbing B******s haha

Took the car up to knockhill on Sataurday. Track Scotland were running a day. Clio ran well and never missed a beat. Did have a moment or two on the wet track but not bad for its first outing.

Haha, wheels should be fine, plenty of sealant on them and the car got washed when we got home. We had a great day, first time on track for both of us. It was a bit daunting at first but got the hang of it and look forward to the next one. There was quite a few very quick cars on track and felt bad for holding them up and getting in the road but got to start somewhere :)

As long as you enjoy it that's the main thing.

There's always faster cars out the thing to do is not be bullied into letting them past in silly places and put yourself or the other cars into harms way. KH say let people past on the straights only, get the corner nailed at comfortable speed then let the guys through on the straight and have some nice clear track for yourself.

Cheers Toby :)

Aye Dave, we were a lot more comfortable the next time out, track was drying out and we had space to get used to the track. Definetly need to sort the handling out a bit, car felt good but its only on lowering springs just now. Any suggestions on what to go for or what works well?

Depends on the budget really.

Eibach sportlines and a set of new cup shocks would set you back sub £400 quid new and less second hand, would be a noticable difference on track.

Coilovers look to spend £600 upwards new, or around £300-400 second hand for somthing decent, avoid raceland, ktec racing etc.

Next step IMO would be poly bushing the anti roll bar and wishbones and a set of solid top mounts.

Has it had new bottom ball joints and rack ends recently? Even having them changed and the tracking set up properly at a place like CLCM or progrip would make it a lot tighter for little outlay.

Just a few ideas to get you guys thinking ;)

Yes, yes you do. It's quickly becoming race season btw. Just in case you missed this fact ;)

Sorry guys haven't done any updates as haven't had much time to do anything to the car for a while.

When the car came back from knockhill it was in a bit of a state. So set about cleaning it. Forgot to take a lot of pictures and there all I phone pics so not the best,

Getting the grime of that took a while. Never seen a clay bar so bad.

Rescued from page 9! We have been neglecting the thread recently. Tommy had been busy machine polishing the car so it would be rude not to get her out for a blast and some pictures! My Uncle has just put his old Beetle back on the road after being in the garage for 7 years. He has owned it for 17 years and its good to see it back out again, hope you like the pics :)

I know, car hasn't really been used since we took it to knockhill apart from the odd run here and there. We just aren't getting the time to use it for what we wanted and Tommy needs the space in the garage.
