Tracking in Midlands

  Chocolate Bar™
my car (2003 dynamique) is in need of 4 wheel tracking and camber checking. so far ive only found two companies in stoke who can do it, and both want around 100.

they're quoted so much because they're claiming they cant get the conventional tracking arms onto the car, so ill need something like the hunter tracking system.

firstly, is 100 absolute extortion??

secondly, can anyone recommend anywhere in the midlands? (stoke, stafford, bottom end of cheshire area??)

many thanks,

Mark

should have mentioned im on coilovers wound down as far as they'll go.

becuase of this they're claiming the arm on the tracking device wont go under the arch.

You can do tracking on any. They just need the setup which goes on the outside of the wheels. My Clio was on Coilover and low and it never was a problem. The stuff which uses the outside of the wheel is the cheapest stuff so any backstreet garage can do it.

So they can get the arm on, lowering your car doesn't send the tracking out

Yes it does!

The more you lower the car the more the hub carrier will move upwards. Since the steering rack is a fixed width and attached to both these it will cause the hub carrier balljoints to move further out therby causing your wheels to mis-align.

i.e they'll go from something like this

to

Incidentally, i've just come back from (attempting) to get mine done - 12 degrees out! Thats after having a drop of about 70-80mm...

Got mine done at Northampton Motorsport, laser alignment level to within a mm and set up coilovers for use with only driver in car.

They are very good but not cheap.

All road cars have bump steer at the front, so changing the ride height will change the toe settings. Also you need someone who can check that the rear wheels are not only at the correct setting, but that they do point along the centre line of the car (the thrust angle) - this is what proper four wheel alignment is about. Whilst on the subject it is also a good idea to check that the track rods are the same length. If you use coil overs with screw type bottom platforms then corner weighting should be on the agenda, as this is not always easy, the next best check is to make sure that the springs at each end are set at the same length on each side.

all this is why any back street garage can not od it properly and why you get what you pay for!
