They are still up to that!?
I got given the key to a £23k mx-5 without even asking for a test drive!
That's because they know if you drive an MX5 you'll want to buy one, but if you drive a Mk4 Clio RS you probably won't
haha
In all seriousness, I've had mixed experiences with test drives at dealers. Shortly after the 200T came out I tried to arrange a test drive, I was 21 at the time- when I arrived at the dealer I was told they only let over 25s drive and I got taken out for a rather useless ride along. Conversely, Abarth a week later took me out for a 2 hour long test drive... And guess which one we bought. I was also looking at Suzuki Swift Sports, booked in for a test drive, arrived, they only had the 1.2 there... But my favourite was our local Skoda franchise, to be fair, we have bought a few cars off them so they know us fairly well, but literally just gave us the keys to a brand new Octavia vRS and told us to come back when we were ready. We ordered that same day.
When I was working at Tesla we used to have a very strict over 25s policy, and it was only on very rare occasion we would let someone younger than this drive- and they would have to source their own insurance for the car for the test drive. But in all fairness that was a different price point and most of our test drive fleet would run sub 3 seconds to 60.
