Thought it was the 182 cup that came second last year...

It was, which is odd as didn't Renault end up selling about 6 in the end...

...slight exaggeration, but I seem to remember it wasn't many.

they are not saying its a better car they are saying its better to drive and more fun than the rest

This was a performance car test (not value for money or anything else), and they put it ahead of the M6 therefore they are saying that it is a better performance car than the M6 and this is simply not true

The 182, in which ever forms are good cars but lets not get silly

No, it was a test of evoness, that mystical quality that makes you feel at one with the road and the car! The trophy may not brake as hard, or have as much power, or corner as hard as many other cars but it totally involves you in the experience rather than leaving you sitting as a passenger while the car does everything for you - that was what they were getting at! (Think Mitsubishi 3000GT - that was apparently a rocket ship but was a crap drive as it didn't involve you!)

^^^ exactly...some people just don't get it.

I can have just as much of an "evo" drive in my wife's 1.6 Zetec Focus as I can in my Cup...it's not about power/performance/whatever...it's about the experience, the feel, the feedback, the smile on your face, the fact that you turn around and go back along the DC for the roundabouts all over again as they're so much damn fun.

So what if it's not as quick as a Gallardo...that means you get a little longer to enjoy the ride :approve:

This is a good point!

Having a valver is more fun in a way than my old Escort RS Turbo - in that I had to measure the power out so I didn't torque steer into the passing bushes or understeer off the roundabout LoL but in the valver you can give it death almost everywhere 'cos it's got less power so isn't going such silly speeds when you do cane it!

MUCH more fun  :D

Just had a good read of it all (out now in Tesco!)

Still amazing to think they literally stepped out of Ferraris, TVRs, Lambos and Astons etc, straight into a Clio and then most of them found it more fun than nearly all the cars they drove.

Many people do seem to miss the point, "how can you compare a £15k car to something like a Lambo" etc etc, forget power, forget the looks, forget the price tag, just sit in the car and see how much pleasure you gain from the driving experience. Surely thats what its all about.

Hopefully the 6th version of the MK3 will be just as good!

There is one glaring fault IMO. If it just solely about driving thrills then why did the Caterham CSR do so badly when they reckoned it was the most thrilling drive of recent memory?

There's always faults with ecoty, like last year there was very little written about the 182.

Good showing by the Trophy though. However, before claiming it's better than all before it, they should run a back to back hot hatch shootout of allt the greatest onesfrom the past 30 years, just to freshen their memories a bit. And girly stuff like comfort should be excluded. Points scored on out and out fun only. No driver aids either.

I thought that Car of the year was about the whole package to be honest.

Very true on that point Mervin, even thought the 182 Cup came joint second last year it hardly got a mention.

I would love to see a mass hot hatch test, 205 GTi, MK1 Golf GTi, Williams. Escort RS Turbo etc V the New School, as much as I love the Hot Hatches of the past the game has moved on, I really reckon the 172/182 will be right up there. I dont think there is an 80/90/00's hatch I havent driven I know what my top 5 would be.

Thumbs up to Evo for rating the Trophy so highly. If it's a more taut and focused version of the 182 I drive, then I can only imagine the driving satisfaction that it gives its driver.

As much as I would lop two limbs off to own a Porsche 959, mad power and gazillion BHP mean diddly squat to the most of us on a day-to-day basis. The 182 still puts a smile on my face - it usually does something on my daily commute that proves that its something a bit special.

Yes, there are quicker, more nimble, faster cars out there. But for Joe Public to walk into a Reno dealership and without ticking one option on the list (well, maybe the Cup suspension pack) - to walk out with a genuine all-rounder car in terms of drivability - is quite impressive.

Now Reno - just get the new model Clio down to the gym - shed all that lard-ass weight, strip it down and make a proper next-gen version of the Trophy....!

Drive a 205 GTi. It's not always about power or price!!!

Just drive one on a country lane and judge for yourself. A 1.6 though it's important.

They did a n evo car of the decade which the Williams got 6th place or something the problem is finding one which is in an as good as new condition with original parts (they tend to get modified now even if its just exhaust decat etc).
I've no idea which cars you've driven but a Williams is superb it is a better car than a 172/182 of any spec in some ways IMO but its all a balencing act of what you think a hot hatch is about vs others views vs money vs the roads tested.

  106 GTi
Greatest drivers cars of the decade included all sorts though including stuff like a 550, 911, Zonda etc, a true hot hatch one would be fantastic. But like you say with everything getting on in ages finding a factory fresh example is one thing, let alone one the owners is going to let be thrashed for a car mag.

Best hot hatch ever IMO, shame it was never released over here 309 GTi 16V. The normal 309 GTi is the best handling car I have even driven, shame it was underpowered, Europe never had this problem with the Mi engined version. The Williams is an amazing car but even though it has the power the 205 GTi never had, I think I would still choose a 205 over it. The whole thing is always going to be subjective, but for me the 182 does everything I want and more.
