Trophy Performance help...

  182 Trophy 019/500
My dad's car has about 1250 miles on the clock. I know that the mileage is still low but the car isn't performing. When you hit the 5200RPM fun zone there isn't any change in performance, it behaves like a 1.4 clio rather than a 2.0 16v. The car has been run in by the book!!!

When did your Trophy finally loosen up? The book says don't expect full performance until approx 1500 miles, is that right? The car is running on Super Unleaded.

My 2003 172 is just starting to feel more lively at 10700! First noticed an performance change at about 3000 miles. Try a few tanks of Optimax and see what you think?

1250 is not a lot of miles will really loose up from 3k onwards as above and depending on how hard its driven take a few more thousand to loosen up fully!! It will come just be patient.

  Clio 197
I ran-in my first 182 by the book....

....and it was slow compared to my current one. (plus it used a fair amount of oil).

I'd try clearing the cobwebs with a nice blast every-so-often.

Run in or not you should feel a nice kick @ 5k rpm

You feel something now and then when you hit 5000rpm but it doesn't feel quick at all.

Maybe he just needs to give it a few more miles and drive it a bit harder now and then.

Stupid question, but you are/is he going through the 5k zone with full throttle?

Mine has loosened up progressively from day one and is now, at almost 48k, a totally different drive...but I always had a very noticeable kick at 5k even from new.

Tight or not, you should feel something

I'd drain the oil, stick in some mineral oil and thrash it for 1000 miles then go back to semi or fully synth. The oil they stick in from factory isnt the best for running an engine in on.....its too good.

Ive heard lots of stories where people have really given their cars a good thrashing in the early parts of their lives (obviously after a safe running in time) and hence their cars have been quicker than others that weren't driven hard early. Providing it is nothing to do with a mechanical problem, it might be worth stretching its legs fairly regularly (after fully warmed up of course) and see if it has any effect.

I'm not sure, i'll have to ask him. I haven't had the chance to drive it

I've also heard stories about the way people drive a car significantly altering performance later in its life. My Mk1 172 has been rolling roaded at about 182bhp with no modifications... an increase which I can only imagine has come purely from the way it was bedded in, unless it's just a 'quick one' and you may have a 'slow' one. :S

mk1's are better they have much better ports renault got cheap on the mk2 engines

only the exhaust port, 182 CNC'ing on the inlet gets better, but exhaust gets teeny weeny.

BUt thye do have the 4-2-1 manifold which rapes the 4-1 on 172's.

I hope this is a typo, aren't you setting up a tuning company called Yozzasport?

ok next question, who can make me one of the rapers to fit my 172cup ??
is the 182 manifold a straight swap, if not what do you have to do and cost pls ?? considering this is just about the only reason the 182 has 8bhp (10ps) more than the 172 it would be a good mod to combine with a 100cell sports cat or decat + induction when mapping

thanks.

ohh btw ive always waited till the car had heated up then a further 3-5mins for the oil (why no oil gauge !) then ive beasted it, its the only was to get a high performance engine but with a shortened life span.
its called sealing the piston rings.

Out of interest, what would it feel like if the VVT did not work? (remained dephased) Loss of power throughout the rev range, or just more noticeable at higher RPM?
Someone must have tried it!

I would say your dad needs to speak to Renault and get the car booked in. If it's performing like a "1.4" then there's something seriously wrong somewhere?

the trophy`s engines are cherry picked from the production line so maybe they take longer to open up and with the low milege it wont help, however my 172MKII was much faster than the 1.4 rover i owned before it from new

if the vvti did not work the car would idle very roughly it cuts off roughly below 2grand i think i couldbe wrong but i´m sure someone will correct me,yeah i like the one about the handpicked maybe they were picked from ones made on a friday afternoon, the 182 manifold on a 172 is a lot of work for a few hours its engine out job i suppose the time to do would be if you were having an engine built etc

nope, i very much doubt it

"hum, lets build 1000 engines and put the best 500 into the Trophy"

guys its a clio F4R engine, not a hand built AMG unit
