Trophy Project 40/500

  Golf GTD Mk7
you're a nutter Chris mate :). This is a wicked idea for a thread. Stripping down doesn't quite say it. Weight watchers would be proud :approve: keep it up mate. You doing anything to the block? performance or asthetic? hate to think on the cost of the dip and respray. Are you having to take all the glass out for that also?

Whiteley, the 2 post (single phase) was new so it cost £1500 inc fitting, You can pick up used ones for £200 if you get lucky, although most are 3 phase :D

The budget isn't big as such, but i've spent the last 4 winters building kitcars of various kinds, all those have taken between 10 and 15k so by comparison this rebuild is cheap ;)

No engine mods at the minute, i'm a great beleiver that engine mods only mask the real problems (driver/chassis) so until i've got the best out of the chassis and my driving the engine mods will have to wait

If i've still got the car this time next year, then i'll probably fit an lsd and do some engine mods next winter. Main interest at the minute is get the car reliable.

Basically the same idea as Beaniemoo with there mark 1? Just with more cash so taken further.

As in, removal of all metalwork no longer required. Beacuse surely strengthening will add weight, making your goal harder to reach?

Will be following this closey!

Thought i'd add a little update ;)

Again no pictures as nothing has happened as such, :sleepy:

So the spec has changed a little, some of you may have seen the for sale ads already.

so out of the project is:

Matched powder coated inlets
Maxogen Air filter
And cup racer ecu, dash display, data logger, loom etc (for sale if anyone wants it)
Trophy front dampers
Mark Fish Springs
Koni adustable at the rear
Mongoose cat back system

And taking over from them is:

AT Direct to head throttle bodies
Icarus ecu
Stack Dash display
AST Sportline II dampers all round
Yozzasport 182 system

I've also taken the N/S door X-brace to custom cages for them to replicate for the O/S, so hopefully they'll be in touch soon with either the brace or the parts for me to weld to replicate it.

The colour is still white and the chassis will hopefully be ready by the end of the month, it will ready for the acid dip :D

so for now that's it, i'll get some pictures up, before the chassis goes for the dip

Interesting project this, will be keeping a close eye on it. Who's doing your acid dipping btw? Someone near dudley by any chance or do you know anyone else? I know a lad that had his mk1 escrot rally car dipped there and they made a right mess of it, know of other stories too that would make me think twice. If you know of another place send me a pm as i have a mate with a '70's challenger he wants dipped.

They aren't that loud. Someone got tested at combe recently and it was 94db I think...

Chris, do you still need that electric wiring diagram? I totally forgot about your PM (sorry!)

Can try and source you one if you need it :)

Yeah Luke if you got one it would be much appreciated :star:

Yeah they submerge the car in acid, it removes all the seam sealer, undersealer, paint, rust, virtually anything that isn't steel (no aluminium if you want it back)

On average there can be up to 32kg's of seam sealer and underseal on your average car  don't think the clio has quite that much bit i wouldn't be surprised if there's about 20kgs worth ;)

After the Dip it's being electrophoretically Primed with zinc phosphate, then i'll get it sprayed white.

Aim is to get the car under 900kg's wet if possible :D

Yeah Paul, the 2 post lift has made the job easier, no more laying on the floor :D You can use it whenever you need, i just need to get the car back together 1st as there's nowhere else for that too go without any wheels ;)

Chris

i take it the acid doesnt damage the galv?

Don't make assumptions that i paid dearly for my Trophy ;)
I paid £5600 for it (Repaired cat d), and i've got back around £1200 for the parts i've removed, hence the car stands me at £4400

If you want to show me a 2005 clio with decent dampers and 25k mileage for £4400 cat d or not then i might have been interested.

As a cat D it was never going to be as desireable as a pristine Trophy so why not change it completely, At the end of the day it's a car, i use it purely for trackdays so do around 3000 miles a year, and nearly all of them are flat out ;)

So don't worry about it being a Trophy, it's just another clio with sachs dampers :rasp:

lmao well justified mate fair play to you

I'll probably but the At's direct.

I've not been in the garage for a few weeks now, so again there is nothing to report on that front :dapprove:

But today the dash display arrived and the 2nd Cobra Pro Evo seat turned up too :D

Stack%20dash.JPG

Still aiming to have the chassis completed by the end of the month, the cage stiffeners are due tomorrow and i've also received the details from Custom Cages for the drivers side door x-brace too, so as of next week, it will be all systems go ;)

Chris

Hi Russ,

The ecu is one sold (and i think designed) by Icarus on here (aka Matt)
I've not got it yet, as i still need to pay Matt a visit to discuss the final ins and outs, but he's been great to deal with so far and the advise he's given me has been invaluable.

Pm or email him for full details, suffice to say it makes more sence to me than any other ecu on the market for similar money.

Thanks for the comments too guy's, i can't wait to get the chassis finished, dipped, painted and back in the garage, so i can't start fitting all these parts :D

Chris

Ordered the dampers today, after a bit of advise and following the ratings given for the cup racers (pro rata) i've ordered a set of AST Sportline II dampers with 110n/mm front springs and 50n/mm rear springs.

I managed to secure a good price for these although it's 4 weeks away until they're ready to be despatched.

Chris

^ my car would handle like a boat on them spring rates. Where did you get them rates?

Hi jay,

As mentioned above they are pro rata (approx) from what the cup racers run, the cup racers run roughly 70/30 f/r
I also took some advise for a few well respected motorsport guy's.

What kind of rates are you running?

Chris

Gutted somebody else has got the serie rossa's on :( lol

All the plans sound very hardcore mate :p Like others have said it seems a bit backward to not go for a 172 cup as mileage won't be a massive issue considering you're rebuilding it all anyway but your car so good luck with it, can't wait to see the end product

The cage is from a clio cup racer, they're a bolt in cage but i've welded it in instead.

I'll have a dig around for some better pictures tomorrow ;)

Chris

Another update

I'm now going to have the chassis seam welded, it'll save worrying about water getting in the seams once it's been dipped and painted. :D

So fingers crossed the plan of action for the next 6 weeks, is to get the chassis dipped, then fetch it back up here to have the seams, extra cage bracing, driver door x-brace, bulkhead plates all welded in.
Then it's back to be dipped again (not as substantial as the 1st dip, or as costly :D) and E coated, then it's back up here again to spray painted.

Once that little lot is sorted, i can actually make a start on building the car back up :D

Cheers, would be good. Any idea where i might find one of these cages? Are they for LHD clio's and require mods to fit a RHD one?

You have something wrong with you Chris, Lol.

Mental.

Does sound good tho. Wish I had the time/funds to go this in depth

...Stack Dash...

Hi Chris,

I'm interested in why you decided not to use the Cup Racer dash and instead chose the Stack dash (is is the lap timing version btw)?

Also did you consider the likes of the DigiDash or the AIM MXL which are similar prices/functionality?

Cheers

Hi Trev,
I chose to use the stack, mainly down to the anologue style rev counter, i've had digital tacho's before and they're not for me, i like to see a needle, even if you don't look at it that often.
I've sold all the cup racer parts so that dash was out of the question.

I've not gone for the lap timing, no trackdays allow it and when competeing i'll more than likely be against the clock (hill climbing, sprinting) so a lap timer serves little purpose. If i have a change of heart on this then it isn't a big deal to upgrade the stack or fit a stand alone timer.

Jay your quite right about the distinct lack of remaining Trophy parts, This goes against what most people think, but for me a Trophy is just a red clio with different seats, dampers and spoiler, anyone could turn their clio Trophyesque, by fitting the above parts, ok so it might not be red

So realistically it will no longer be a Trophy as it's only retaining the spoiler, but the fact it was Trophy 40 of 500 can never be taken away from the car (not that i'm worried)

Your right about the weight Paul, but it should give better protection against the elements and also aid chassis stiffness and longevity, not that i'm fast enough to exploit it

Chris

Just got a deadline to meet, the chassis needs to be at the dippers for the end of the month :D:D

Best get the screen removed and also sort out the other panels ready for dipping.

Off to the garage to make a start now ;)

A couple of pictures of the Cup racer cage as requested

Cage%20front%20end.jpg

Rear%20view%20of%20cage.jpg

These are pictures as the car stood a month ago, once the dip has been down the front end will pass through the bulkhead to the struts and a matching offside door brace will be added.

When it comes back from the 1st dip i'll take some pictures before it goes rusty ;) and then some more once all the welding is complete.

Chris

Why have it dipped twice? Why not do all the welding and then dip it once?

Not a piss take, a genuine question, I dont know anything about the process
