TURBO’ing a 1.9 derv!

can i do it on the std compression and run low boost, and will i need a new fuel pump or just bang the fuelling right up on mine? also what turbo should i use cos i have got one off a mitsi evo 6 sitting in my garage doing nothing! could i use that and how would i fit a dump valve on a turbo derv?

cheers boyz.

Ah right, shame, becuase if it was petrol it would of been that Volvo engine which can be turbod. You could have a job on your hands there mate..youll have to find someone willing to do it, uprate internals and do the job at a one off cost. Get a R5 engine like many Clios have now..

its very expensive to do the r5 gtt conversion, i have been quoted a grand plus donor car! i will just bang a turbo on it and see what happens, may try to fit the megane 1.9 td fuel pump as well

there is only one way to find out what works and that is to try it. at the end of the day if it all goes tits up i have had fun tryin! lol

diesel run hight compression number always have doen and they need to to operate.

You need to drop the compression of a petrol but not with the diesel unless you going to get serious mods to it.

The amount of extra boost that you run shouldnt be a problem its the fueling which will. Running at 2 bar on you engine as it is will give 0 extra hp cos you need to increase the fueling.

Runnign a dump valve on a TD has no purpose at all they dont nee one as the throttle doesnt exist the same as in a petrol.

A turbo used in a diesel will give about 2/3 the Hp output potential as a petrol so say the evo turbo gives 300hp then in diesel form 200hp is potentially availiable.

Im not sure though its worth tunning the 1.9 engine its not that modern so how long it would take the extra power is questionable. The most you could get out of it assuming you dont install completly new single point high pressure injectors from a Golf or a common rail is 180hp with 300lb but the whole engine would need rebuilding for this.

It would be simplier and more advantagious to get a 1.9 TD engine and gearbox out of another more powerful Renault ie Megan/ Laguna and drop that in.

If you want to do it though you will need a proper sized turbo intercooler to keep the temps down all the piping for them. Bigger injectors and fuel pump. new exhaust plus air filter kit. Assuming the engine has 60HP at the moment then at 7PSI (~1/2 bar) 90hp is potentialy there. With 1 bar (14.7psi) 110hp is about what you can hope to get. The increases is torque will be % similar to the HP gains. I have to say though I cannot see the job being an easy or advantageous one there are similar means of gettting more power drop a bigger or pre-made engine into the car which is pre-strenghtened for the job.

Good luck though
