Theres certainly a lot of talk about GT Turbo conversions in Clios at the minute, but I would say youd prefer the real thing unless you put a GT Turbo lump in a shagged-engined Valver. A basic spec Clio obviously isnt going to be able to handle the GT Turbo power properly with a little bit of lowering, some big wheels and some grooved discs! Of course, its been done, but youd prefer the drive of your GT Turbo after youd done it all! If you dump the lump in a Valver though, youve got the wider tracks and uprated suspension/brakes etc already there. But unless youre planning radical tuning (which is obviously where a turbo wins), you might just want to try a Valver first. The Valver and GT Turbo - as standard - are more or less the same in terms of performance, with the GTT giving a bit on top speed, but clawing it back on the 0-60 sprint. If youre not planning to mod the thing, perhaps you should try a 16v first - the high revs kick can be just as addictive as the turbo boost.
