Turn lights on - speedo goes up to 160mph

  Clio 172 PH2 Flamer
Hi All, I have a PH2 172 with a very annoying problem, usually everything is fine, however if It is wet (and sometimes in the dry to be honest) and I turn my headlights on (xenons) my Speedo goes up to and fluctuates at 160mph (drops to 90, goes back up etc, not relative to speed)

Im confuzzled and am presuming a bad earth / faulty pulse sensor or something?

Any help will be massivley appreciated as its making the mileage go up as if I really was doing 160mph.... :(

Have you got HID's???? Everyone knows they make your car go faster.

In terms of a serious answer,I'm afraid I have no idea as I've only had my clio a week. Use the search function, you're probably not the only person to have asked this.

I'm not really sure what to suggest then mate, such an unusual problem. I've never seen anything like this before.... Your best bet is probably to call a Renault specialist.

That is bizarre, what years your Clio? Could be a problem with your speedo sensor (depending on year), but if it's only when your turning your lights on I'm going to guess it's a wiring fault and you should get it to an auto electrician, espcially if it happens more in wet weather.

You could try re-setting your clocks... with the car off, press and hold the button on the stalk and turn the ignition to possition 2, everything will light up and the dials will go mad and it will beep. Then after a couple of seconds press the trip reset button on the dash. Don't think this has any adverse effects, I've just done it on mine because my trip computer kept resetting to zero everytime the car stood for an hour or two and it seems to have fixed that for me.

To be honest though I can't see that making any difference. Get it to an auto electrician, or a specialist.

wow thats a tough one! resoldering the plugs on the dash is the best DIY i can suggest, but ye trying an expert on this one sounds like a good call
