tyre blackener on tyre tread, yes the guy i bought my car from is that stupid....

Owned the car about 8 months now and was luck enough to get my first puncture(front left).. Pulled out the very shiny looking spare wheel, the tread had been cleaned with tyre blackener i assumed as it was really shiny... Anyway took the car out, and every time i turn right i go straight on, no grip at all!

Thats it really, just thought id share that

Didnt work, i drove about slamming on the brakes and lighting the tyres up but didnt do anything except wear out the decent tyre, got the puncture fixed today so ill have 2 good tyres again in the morning

I heard of a dude with an evo 6 who blacked up the tread on his tyres, he did ok till he got to a corner where he binned it. Whether the story is true or not I don't know.

Sounds a bit extreme Cat! I have dressed the treads at shows for years, quick wipe of with some blue roll and a few yards and it is all gone.

Some Megs APC will take it clean off back to clean rubber.

I've had the odd understeer moment when I've just blacked the tyres and spread a bit too much onto the outside tread, so IMO it's totally possible. WTF would you know Rich? All you ever do is clean yours. You'd need to drive it to experience any handling changes

Alternatively, up to 5000rpm dump the clutch, leave a nice big '11' in your local PC world carpark...

I did about a mile of slamming brakes on wheelspin away, slam brakes wheelspin.... and its still just as bad, its a michelin pilot sx tyre, maybe its a combo of s**t tyre and blackener or silicone on tyre?

If its a pilot SX check the DOT code.

Tyres go shiny when the silica breaks down, tyres have a 5 year shelf life and sx's were discontinued a while ago.

As tyre manufacturers put silica in the formula to give better grip (thus making the milage of a tyre shorter) it could explain your problem.

Interesting that could be it, it was oily to touch though also is that what happens when it breaks down? Ill have to try not get anymore flats

yeah feels like a much harder plastic (which esentialy it is) has like a glassy sheen to it feels smoooth or oily, doesnt offer any resistance like a normal tyre.

Could also be that its been there since new and the moudling compound has hleped breakdown the tyre.

a good MOT tester should fail your car on it btw.

also shows how much tyre tech is needed in modern cars. remove the silica and you have a tyre similar to those used in the 70's.
