Tyre Depths! Argh!

Right As title, iam a little confuzzlated.
I know the legal tyre limit is 1.6mm
but iam buying some second hand wheels with 5mm of tread. is that ok?
and on average how long will it be before i have to change them?
How much tread do tyres have when they are new?

About 8mm on new tyres . Depends on the make of the tyre how long they will last .

Depends how you drive and how much power your car has.
For track work a set of fornt tyres last a day on track in my diesel they last about 6 track days.
My present set have lasted 4k and are down to the minimum I've had them last 16k though.
PS I drive very hard.

i have a 1.2 16v lol so no hard core burnout material, and i drive briskly lol not chav on speed fast but i dnt trundle lol
what would you say?

I dont like them mate. They are a very soft compound tyre. They will grip the shite out of the road but will wear rapidly!!
