Umm ipod switches off my pc - HELP!!!

Wtf ??:S

My bro came round & I gave it to him to sort out for me (well he took it to sort out as i'm at work) he said it recognises it, then 2 secs later the pc turns off:S

He said his one did the same when he got it, he said that the usb port he used then was dodgy, so he used another one (he's being using the good one)
The pc has all his tunes in it, it can't be that though can it ?

I asked if he's charging it up & he said it won't as it closes the pc down.

He said the ipod is fine (I got it off ebay lol - it is new though and came like it was from a shop.

It's an 80gb classic, series 6 or something. The pc has xp on it.

Just my luck it's not happening tbh, he says that the ipod seems ok, he's now charging it on a docking station.

Umm, thoughts ?

It's probably the cable that's fucked

Fucked cable or port can cause it, as it can bridge the wires in the USB causing it to short and power off for safety.

He's tried both cables, both his & this one. His cable works for his, not for me though. iirc he has a 30 gb one from a couple of years a ago.

I don't get it, the lead works with my bro's one & is all cool, yet for the one I got it messes up :S Neither leads works for my one.

Typicial, me & technology = fail as always.

I've tried different usb ports & both cables in them, nothing happens it just stuffs my computer.

I need help please folks.

Id imagine it was turning the computer off because of shorting on the mother board.
Try spraying contact cleaner into the usb port WHEN the computer is OFF. Do the same to the wire ends and the ipod

Could try compressed air too, to clean the s**t out of the USB ports

I have now tried all of the usb ports on the pc (it has four) previously i'd tried three of them.

I have created a new user on it & I have downloaded itunes 8. When I plug it in it comes up recognising it, then a short while after the pc re starts itslef.

A dude at work used it with my lead on his laptop (a mac one) it was all ok, he put an album on yesterday & took it off today when I asked him to clear the ipod.

I don't get it, my bro's ipod works fine on this pc.

Sounds like it it's your USB ports not liking the iPod tbh

Yep, your right. I got a usb hub earlier on, it recognised it but wouldn't connect it.
I went into the device manager & the usb part had a yellow question mark on it - smart !

I plugged the printer into the hub (the hub is supposed to be plug & play lol) no printer detected. Hmm four duff usb ports, great stuff.

How do I go about replacing them ?? Who does this sort of thing ?

You can't, really, they'll be soldered to the motherboard

If you have a spare PCI Slot in your machine you could buy a USB PCI Card and fit it..

I ran out of USBs in my old computer and bought one similar with a firewire port aswell which was handy

I thought that the hub would sort things out, usb's seem to be screwed though - odd really as they work for other things.
