Unstable front end... any ideas?

  RB FF 182
It's 'nearly new'

I appreciate its boring but it'll be nice to drive something reliable and cost effective. As said before, I hardly ever get chance to open up the 172 so I don't think ill miss it. Although, I have been driving it like I stole it since I traded it in. Haha

I have had the same problem since owning my car, front seemed to get pulled into every pothole on the road, would pull harder when on the brakes, has the tracking done which seemed to help, but today went to Rentech in Portsmouth, they showed me how badly worn the front tyres were as the tracking was has been off, so recommended getting some new ones and to get the tracking done again. Wanted to bite the bullet and get the Michelin Pilot Sport 3's but just cant justify spending £144 per corner on a clio, no matter how good they are, went for Toyo T1r's instead and the steering problem seems to be completely fixed, upon inspection of the old tyres even though they did have tread left they were all distorted, so would say get a new set of fronts if your having problems

I had a similar problem with my ph1, felt light on the front when accelerating if that makes sense, and light at speed 70/80mph. Got new coilovers, new top mounts from renault and got the tracking done. And the drive home, massive improvement. Its prob of no help really as not everyone will do the above. My guess.....new shocks, top mounts and tracking will sort it.

sounds like mine.

would it do it all the time or just when you were braking to a stop on a worn out road?

mine seems to follow the camber on worn out roads when im braking. most things on the front are new, apart from wishbone bushes, top mounts, shocks and tyres. i replaced the steering rack bushes last weekend as the rack was moving a bit, big improvement and stopped the small change in direction on bumps. as a result it needs tracking again which is no biggy.

Mine followed every camber in the road and got pulled into every pothole when accelerating, braking or just rolling in neutral, had the balljoints checked no play, same with the track rod ends and steering rack, which was a surprise today when i was told it had been replaced. But it was worse when on the brakes, was doing 50mph on a newly re-laid road had to do an emergency stop and the car shot 3 ft left, which scared me enough to get the problem sorted asap, the new front tyres i put on today seemed to have sorted the problem, jack up your car spin the front wheel and make sure the tyre has even wear and also is not deformed in any way, mine were pretty bad, feels like a new car now, also check the rear shocks for leakes as i have been told that that could also cause this problem.

unfortunately the other end to you! farnborough, on the surrey/berks/hants border.
mine doesn't sound as bad as yours, my probs sound more like imprezaworks. it's pretty straight most of the time, sometimes pulls when braking approaching t junctions on worn roads (which could be tracking).
the biggest issue is the handling when making good progress. the handling seems to go much lighter and feels like its being pulled about.
