Upgrade AA on 182

  2008 Golf GTI Edition 30

Been reading a few threads on being able to "upgrade" the AA cover to include punctures etc.

When would I have to do this? At the dealer or later?
Who do I pay the 50quid to? Dealer or AA?

Anyone else done it? Not doing it? Reasons for either?

think you have to pay the dealer. Havent done it myself as i get free cover from my lloyds platinum account but if i didnt have that i would have done as the most likely need to call the aa in a 182 is for a puncture i would say.

Probably worth the money as 1 callout in the 3 years would be more expensive than that.

Ive done it do it through your dealer of phone them yourself, you dont get an extra member number or anything though.

Picked my 182 up yesterday, mentioned to the salesman about £50 upgrade for tyre cover and he said not to bother, so I didnt.

I was supplied with a phone number to upgrade the AA cover - I assumed the number was the AAs.

£50 just for tyre cover??? No ta!

Ive not bothered either. Plus it says on the card it covers those things so Ill just kick up a stink if I get any problems.

Ive still got RAC cover which runs until March of next year also. LOL

Besides, Ive only had 2 punctures in 10 years! (kiss of death)

What would the extra cover entail anyway? If you did get a puncture, what would they do? give u a spare wheel? Take your cans of foam and fill the tyre up for you?

I phoned the help line number to upgrade to the non warrenty incident cover.

At £50 for 3 years its reasonable as an upgrade and without a spare tyre Im sure Ill get a puncture at some point in 3 years.

Also I bought a 12v pump with digital guage from halfords. Its a very small michelin model for £25 (offer price). Its go to be worth its weight in cheese if I get a slow puncture.

what if the tyre is not repairable with the foam and it needs to be replaced before moving the car and you are on the hard shoulder of the motorway, would come in handy then, they could low load you to a garage to get a new tyre, if you hadnt paid for the cover, this would cost you a alot more that £50.

I bought a pump as well, preferable to "ruining" a tyre with the foam.

Dave182, youve got a point, would probably cost you £100+ to get towed.

yep, the dealer tried to tell me not to bother but i persisted. He didnt know how to get it, but did in the end.

Def worth it - it covers you for incidents you cause yourself - ie punctures, running out of fuel etc. The guy doing my handover didnt know the AA cover had changed from the previous offer but theres a small paragraph in one of the leaflets. You get a reference number over the phone which you need to write down and carry with you as proof if you ever need to use the service.

The additional cover is for attending/recovering from no fuel or mis-fueling, lost/dadamged keys, punctured/damaged tyres or accidents. The cost is £50 for 3 years from date of first registration and the Dealer has the paperwork to sort it out.

So basically the upgrade covers all of the most likely eventualities!!

I also like the idea of carrying a pump around as standard, as many tyres can be plugged/repaired if punctured in the right way and, at £150(say) a throw, its gotta be better than a whole new tyre. Any links to find such device appreciated :)

Will prob go for the AA upgrade..

So is there any time limit after buying the car for upgrading the cover? Ive had mine a few weeks....

Also their cover definitely covers you at home and also if you break down out on the road they will take you to your desired location and not the nearest garage as happens with the cheaper cover you get from breakdown companies?

Its definitely worth having. The AA covers you at home and breakdown cover etc as normal. The extra £50 covers you for things that are effectively your fault - puncture, lost keys, run out of fuel. The most important bit really is the puncture, as the 182 has no spare, if you have a puncture youd have to use the foam, which can only be used once and for small holes.

Coco, i wouldnt bother.

Did you know, that if you car doesnt carry a spare tyre... even if it was designed that way, and you have a puncture. The furthest the AA will take you is 15 miles.

So if you get a puncture more than 15 miles away, and your in a 182/Cup , your stuffed.

I upgraded mine yesterday. This is definately worth buying. £50? Its a no-brainer.

Just phone them - no need to involve a dealer - number in the detail below.

Renault For You Non-Warranty Incident Cover

Peace of mind

Renault Assistance is provided during your three-year warranty but what if you have a puncture, run out of fuel, your keys are stolen or you are involved in a road traffic accident?

Non-warranty incidents

Renault Assistance provides the services of the Automobile Association during the three-year warranty, but while this programme aims to provide you with peace of mind motoring, it only covers manufacturer-based or mechanical faults on your vehicle.

It does not cover certain non-warranty incidents that may occur, for example:
The use of incorrect fuel, or lack of fuel
Wheel changes, punctured tyres
Instances where keys have been locked inside the vehicle, lost or stolen
Road traffic accidents

More often than you think

On average 1 in 5 of all Renault Assistance call-outs are for non-warranty incidents.

The costs you will incur

If a call-out is made in any of these instances, assistance will be arranged but the responsibility for payment will remain with you or the nominated driver

Call-out charges are currently priced at:
£95 inc. VAT, per call out for all non-warranty incidents (except road traffic accidents)
£175 inc. VAT, per call out for road traffic accidents

Non-warranty incident cover

£50 to cover you for 3 Years for all call-outs for non-warranty incidents

For only £50, additional cover can now be purchased that will protect against all of these non-warranty incidents for a total of three years from the date the vehicle is first registered.

This additional cover, called "Renault For You, Non-Warranty Incident Cover"* is exclusively available for Renault customers for vehicles registered from the 1st March 2004 and can be purchased by contacting either your supplying dealer or by calling Renault Assistance on 0870 163 0050.

Transferable

But what if you sell your Renault sooner than expected? The benefits of Non-Warranty Incident Cover can be transferred to the new owner completely free of charge, adding to the value of your vehicle.

*Please note that if Renault For You Non-Warranty Incident Cover is purchased after the date of first registration, the cover is still only valid until the vehicle is three years old.

I collected my Clio 182 with cup packs on Saturday. Dealer told me to contact AA to upgrade cover direct. Not only does it cover punctures but also running out of fuel - I think its worth it for 3 years peace of mind!

Ok I need this confirmed as its very important. Will they take you to the destination of your choice or do they limit you as phunkey says to a certain distance like 10 or 15 miles?

If they wont take me to the destination of my choice I might just as well keep my Tecso breakdown cover.

  Yaris Hybrid

phunkey, could it be that this guy with the RX8 just bought the cheaper AA cover that does limit you to being taken the nearest reputable garage where as the cover that comes with the Clio is the more comprehensive cover?

That more expensive cover is around £80 to £100 a year depending on which company you go with so upgrading for £50 would save me a packet over 3 years.

  Yaris Hybrid

Sorted. Was £50 and its the full cover that takes you to your destination and allows you to call them out to your home.

i had the upgrade on my 182 and glad i did as i split the sidewall of my tyre a few months ago in WALES and they brought me back to the MIDLANDS so there is no limit on distance.

if i hadnt of upgraded it would of cost me more than £50.

i was lucky really as i found out about it after i brought my car from this forum:D the dealer never said jack sh*t about it

  Yaris Hybrid

Yeah dealer never said a word to me but given the service I have had so far thats no surprise! The AA said I should have a letter of some kind with details of pricing etc but I havent got one of those either! If it wasnt for the forum I wouldnt have known!
