Upgrade from a 172 to a 182

  Black Gold with cup packs
I currently own a black 02 172 32k on clock.
Is it worth upgrading to the 182?
Or pumping pump the cash I have into the 172?
All comments appreciated!

i wouldnt bother, its virtually the same car,

i would spend the money on the 172, does the 172 have any mods?

  Mk4 .:R32
I wouldn't bother mate. Little to no difference in performance. Fair enough it will be a newer car, but is it worth shelling out 2 or 3 extra grand. I've wondered the same myself, but I'd rather spend about a grand on mine making it faster than a 182 ;)

Yeah that were my thoughts, this idea has been pestering me for months now!
I have a good 3-4k to spend, whats my best bet?
I am still a bit weary pumping money into the car though!
And yes I have a pro speed SS exhaust, only mod!
I have Good tyres, considered some coilovers,
I have been considering the GDI Cam, remap pack?

  Mk4 .:R32
save 3 grand towards a new car next year and spend a grand on your car now so its faster in the meantime?

  clio 172
3 - 4 k is a lot of money!!!

get the car handling well, thats always the best bet, who wants straight line speed!
H and R's would be nice,
and im sure a remap will take your car to about 180bhp
all for under 1 k ! + vat

get some coil overs and a remap

and some decent tyres

bye bye standard 182's:rasp:

^ lol, sure!

Cause a Cup packed 182 fitted with PE2's is such a bad road setup

To the OP, I went from a PH2 172FF to a Cupped 182FF and in stock form it is a much better car, handles a lot better than an OE 172, and despite what people like to think Renault made a lot more changes to the 182 than simply adding 10ps.

However, is it worth shelling out 2-3K for? Probably not. You'd be better off tuning your 172, or keeping your money in the bank.

However my 182 definitely picks up better than my 172 did from lower down the range.

Full tracking/geo - £100-250?
Whats this?

My argument is of I pump 2 grand into my 172, at the end of the day would I have been better off selling my car and putting the 2 grand towards a 05 55 plate car? Would it realy be that different from the 182 after spending 2k?

setting up the coilies properly and camber adjustment.

Don't bother with coilovers. just get some eibachs, inlets matched, decat and a remap. should be about 180-185bhp then

I did it a few years back and loved it.Pretty much the same car but i loved it

If you have a budget for say 9k then i would look at a trophy beacause that would be a nice step up

If I go for a 182 it will be a cup reccaro pack, or a trophy there is one for sale in raing blue in my area a cup that is.
I am not so sure on the colour of the trophy though, a bit tomatoish
If I go for a cup though it must have the recaros as the cup interior is a bit s**t

What percentage of 182's do you think come without Cup packs 'freak'?

Sorry I wrongly assumed from your ridiculous post that you were in fact talking sh*t.

before its a 172 v 182 argument , you will need to spend in excess of 1500 quid to get the same kind of power .

i'd keep the car and put some money into it .
though you wont get that money back when you come to sell her , choices choices ?

What about if you didnt spend that 3/4k and save a bit more until next year when the 197 will have depreciated a bit more?

  Mk4 .:R32
to be honest 182's aren't any faster. Had a race with one a while ago and he didn't gain anything on me.

I had an 04/04 172, last of the bunch.

Had it for a year then thought about a 182 with cup packs, like my friend has.

While looking i saw & tested a trophy, 18 months on still loving it.

To all those that say no difference that is rubbish.

Cupped 182 is way better than 172 & trophy is in a league of it's own.

Will I get a lowish mileage trophy for £9k?
But don't I lose climate control then?

  Cupra 300 ST 4drive
I only sold my 51 plate 172 as the miles were racking up on it (run it for 3 years), you say yours is 32k, I'd keep the 172 for a while longer. Save a bit more and get an R26 meg later on

I wouldn't pay the extra for the 182 if your 172 is in good nic and been looked after!

Spend a few quid on the 172, inlets, remap, Eibachs, Itg panel and save the rest for your next car!

Or sell up now , decent car's can be had for 8-9k now ep9 TypeR ?

Might need more cash for low miler.

Air con is fine.

Yours is due cambelt, so i would get that done or sell it. Not cheap.

No. Hardly an upgrade, more like a sideways step.

32k your 172 will just be getting run in nicely!

Save your money and buy something different or mod your 172.

I did the same, 172FF to 182cup. I disagree slightly, always felt selling the 172 was a mistake. The 182 is a step up, but only slight. My 172 was always quicker (sold it to Grant, he'll confirm that), but I think it was one of those 1*2's that for some reason came out the box v. quick. 172 rides better, but 182 handles better. Had a couple of flats in the 172, so was very glad to have a spare wheel! If I had 8k to spend now, I'd go for a 172 every time, and pocket the change.

don't bother wasting money modding imo. keep saving the money as your 172 is only going to be worth the same as a standard one when it comes to sell.

Orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, buy a 225 like I did. A complete upgrade in every department. You wont be disappointed

I went from a 172 to a 182, and much prefer the 182 - however I did it over two years ago when 182s were still the latest model.

I wouldn't bother changing from one to the other now though, save the money and get an R27.

I went from an 02 plate FF 172 to a cup packed 54 plate FF 182. I bought both new, did about 28k in the 172 and have done over 34k in the 182 and I would say the 182 is definately a better more complete car.

The only time I regret it is when I think about the financial side of it and how I could have been clear from finance for several years now had I kept the 182. If you want to and can justify the cash do it, if you can't stick with the 172 and for those looking for an RS and trying to decide whether to get a FF 172 or finding the extra for a cupped FF 182 I would definately say find the extra you wont regret it. As RB says above though I think if I was changing right now I'd be more inclined to test drive an R27 and see how it compares.

And lose thousands on it in a matter of months, no thanks. Should be a great second hand purchase though in a year or two's time.

Don't need to wait that long, as long as someone else has taken the initial depreciation hit. My 182 was 5 months old when I got it, saving me well over 2k.

This
R27 has been on PH for ages and he's just dropped the price.
