Urgent Help, loud engine noise.

Hi all,

Firstly engine runs fine, but i get a VERY loud a very high pitched noise from cold or from warm. If the cars driven for a short time this noise upon stopping will have disappeared, however leave it 10mins then go out again, start it......its back.

Im thinking 1 of 3 things,

1. Water pump? (it hasnt been done to my knowledge).
2. Power steering pump. (Have checked fluid its fine)
3. Air con pump....(sound doesnt alter with aircon on or off)

ALL belts and tensioners were done by KTR, <10k miles ago.

Heres the video, http://www.sitone.co.uk/issues/IMG_0049.mpg

Its really loud as you can see.

maybe alternator, check if it's getting red hot when driving/driven .

I could'nt see/play the vid on me Mac, so wild shot

(mine does a pitch noise, dissapears when warm. Alternator maybe after 75K+ i think on mine)

To me that sounds like something in the process of becoming seized.. Noise sounds like metal on metal..

Can you distinguish between what side its coming from, I'm guessing the side with the belts?

Possibly noise going away due to heat expanding metal and what ever is rubbing stops contact, then after cooling, metal retracting will start again.. I'd get it looked at ASAP fella!

Yeh it sounds pretty damn bad doesnt it, it sounds belt side to me, but its very difficult to tell. I guess its the bearings in the pump etc and as you say, expansion makes it go away....

take the auxilliary belt off and start it - see if the noise goes away. This will help you narrow the problem down.

You can also turn the accessories (water pump, power steering, alternator etc) by hand to see if any of them feel stiff or rough.

...saying that, Im not 100% sure of the water pump is driven by the aux belt or cambelt.

Ive never head anything that high-pitched from an engine before its not something electrical is it? ie nackered alarm unit.

is the alternator getting hot?

I always thought water pumps started to leak when on the way out?

Nah alternator is cool, and whats more.....the sound has gone away.....it hasnt occured again for 2 or more days. So i just dont get it, car runs / starts great, so i guess ill just keep an eye on it.

I thought it might be the throttle body, as they do whine a bit.....but thats a serious whine.

Yeh Water pump is on bottom of aux belt, quite a b**ch to change on a FF.
