i am tryign to remove my mk1 exhaust, so far i have jacked up the car. the back box is obviously quite bulky so i need to know if u remove ti 2wards the front end of the car or do u pull it out the back end. also i am gonna need to drop the suspension i think to do this? is this right? if os how do i drop it? do i undo the shock dampers to drop it? if some1 has done this before please can u help me as i need this exhuats and i need to do it myself! thanks!

iirc the backbox unbolts just after it rises up over the torsion bar?

the back of the car needs to be reasonably high to be able to tilt the exhaust and get the backbox off then it is easy to unbolt the rest....

yes i have the back of the car up at the highest setting on some axle stands. are you sayign the backbox just unbolts frm the pipe? i think mine is welded on. the problem is that big bar going right across the bottom of the car connecting to both wheels (the axle???)it is very tight to the base of the car so there isnt really much room to get the box and pipe out!

if it is 1 piece then ull have to cut it off (thats what i had to do with my mk2 ph2) but with my mk1 there was a join just before the turn (as u can see in the pic) then a join before it went up and over the torsion bar which joins onto the backbox section

the std exhaust was the same arrangement as the pic ive shown above....

ps. the "joins" are usually the sleeves where one end is bigger and slides over the over then a bracket goes around it to clamp it on

Hi mate yes those joins are present and i understand what you mean now, my problem now is how do u open those joins where the pipe slips into each other as they seem pretty stuck?

On the Williams/valver the backbox is separate from the system and it comes out through the back. Its tight, but it should clear the axle ok.Has yours been welded in2 1 piece?

To pull the backbox off I think I had to lie underneath from the back and put my feet on the bend in front of the axle and pull & twist the actual backbox.Used plenty of releasing spray on the join aswell.
Make sure the cars supported really well before you get under it though mate.
