V6 230/255 Engines - how do they differ

  Clio RS 172 Ph2

& no stupid answers please (like 25bhp!)....

what I mean is, in all the reviews I read, they seemed to say that the mk2 v6 had essentially the same engine as the mk1 but with some tweakery to extract another 25 horses...

but comparing the top of the engines thats visible when you take the engine covers off, they look completely different, so are they infact the same power-plant with different components here & there, or are they actually very different engines?

Also, the pre-launch "concept" V6s had a different looking engine again...

The difference in quoted performance figures is more down to better gear ratios than an extra 25bhp, torque remains the same.

  Forester Sti, SC Clio V6,

Cam profiles. inlet plenum, 40% bigger Throttle body, different map - it just breathes better - otherwise its the same

  Forester Sti, SC Clio V6,

And Tims right - cheapest performance gain is gearing and its a straight swap

Cool cheers guys! As for the gearing being a straight swap... have you had that done Mike, and if so what sort of money are you looking at to do it (parts & labour)?

  Forester Sti, SC Clio V6,

Gearbox is about £1500 frpm Scott on here - labour, Id speak to him, gotta be a few hundred quid.

Renault had the v6 engine built for the clio it produced 255 bhp but when it was fitted to the mk 1 due to handling problems etc the bhp was toned down.so when the mk2 was made they made changes to handling and the restriction was taken off

Ill have a word with him when I collect next week!

The later V6 also had ported heads & high flow valves, I have two pairs of these heads complete (very low miles) if any one needs any.

Yeh, very interested to know some one who will remap a standard ECU and not a special Trophy R Sport one. I just paid £3.5k +vat for Motec M800 with extras. The V6 started life as 1997 Laguna engine and TWR tweaked it to get 285bhp on the Trophy comp cars but they also ran specially selected thick wall blocks, non std; tubular exhaust, injectors, ecu, plenum, etc.

When changing trannies remember that the 255 cars run 18 inch wheels & 235 cars run 17 inch wheels so that alters fd ratio a bit.

Whos done your Motec? A couple of us are running that, Be interested to know who has mapped it for you. What are your extras? Traction control, launch control, Dash?

Robert at Damax can get into pretty much any ecu now. Clio V6 Bosch units included.

Rob [Joules] at Damex has done the initial start-up map for the dynamometer and Simon Norris is going to map it on the dyno with exhaust and accessories installed. Gone for traction control, launch control, lambda control and ignition amps with coms connector. Rob has made it ready to run a dash but I havent seen an install on a V6 yet so undecided about that.

You going to be at Castle Combe tomorrow? Rob wont be there as he is at Silverstone doing the gts cars.
