so im thinking about getting a v6 start of next spring, are they viable as a daily car? ive driven my mates lunar grey one so im aware of how they drive etc. But can they be used as a daily car? What is the servicing prices also?

i used mine everyday for 4 months (11,000miles!) brilliant, loved every minute

they're a bit thirsty

servicing not bad apart from "the big one"

parts and tyres = expensive

I use mine as a daily drive. Servicing so far is pretty much the same as my 182, apart from the 5 yearly cambelt one which is about £1000!

I don't find it too expensive to run, but parts will be quite expensive when they need replacing.

It's no more/less easy to drive that a 172. IMO it's easier. Much more grunt, so you can bumble about in 6th. Pull away in 2nd.

I'm doing a 2yr write up just now, will post it this wk. Gives you an indication into costs and running etc!

whats the chances of one being riddled with problems say i picked one up with 30-40k miles on it?

Main things I'd look out for are clutch, brakes and tyres. Most problems you'll have is with consumables and the coils. It also goes without saying to look for one with the cambelt done if possible.

Mine on 35,500 (mk1) it's fine

When buying, try to get one where the owner has had it for a bit, years ago I called up for an 02 reg one that was five years old - it had had 10 owners ! Sod that right off !! You will find though that most just buy to say they've had one, if they are selling after a few months i'd be very wary.

Bills are very important too, check them thouroughly.

Crash damage is a major major issue, I only wanted a straight one, finding a non categorised car was hard, esp one with not that many previous owners.

As the mk1 is becoming pretty cheap now they are falling into the wrong hands. If your after a mk2 you should fare better as they are that bit newer.

What is the real world MPG like on these? My cup averages about 32mpg so i don't exactly drive like i stole it. Would 25-27mpg be reasonable on a daily commute in comparison to the cup???

depends on what you are doing your commute in. Day to day town driving 22mpg I expect and mostly motorway work you could average late 20's.

22mpg, nasty. Its mainly a clear run on the way in 40/60 mph roads but congestion on a night is pretty bad. Can't expect a V6 engine to be the most fuel efficient! its not about saving petrol in these beasts!

I'm currently doing about 20mpg, just tootlings about town. On the ring it was getting 12.8mpg.

I think fred has a hole in his tank tbh!

Wouldn't advise one as a daily driver personally but there are people out there who manage it. Key points of ownership for me are:

1. Make sure you have a garage or secure place to park it;
2. Save about £100.00-£150.00 a month to cover maintenance / repairs;
3. Check that you have a decent specialist nearby.

Good luck!

2 & 3 are debateable. Mine only cost me fuel per month. But i do put money aside for tax/tyres per yr.

Specialist, aye that would be nice...Nothing like that up here unfortunately, so i'm at the peril of Renault!

I guess we are all different in our approach Ali. My budget is aimed at covering most things including the cambelt service, brakes, tyres, occasional bumper resprays and alloy reconditioning. I'd rather save too much than too little ;)

mines a daily car, i dont see why not to be honest... its got no boot and its a pain to park but other than that its fine.

goes over speedbumps without too much fuss, the only bit that catches on mine is the undertray, mines averages about 16mpg really but i didnt buy it to worrie about mpg!

you'll find everyone staring/pointing/taking pictures too everywhere which is funny!

I also do this, obviously not bad as the car is only a year old, i also save for the insurance renewal as well.
I always advise to take these into when buying a car, as it these that can make it unaffordable.

I've not looked bak mate. And i've still got it. So that says something!! It's alot slower/less comfy/etc than the BM. But i'd choose it every day!!

well while im young no major bills to pay and i love my cars why not! something to look back on and say ive owned:cool:

26, 5 years NCB, £575 greenlight, all mods declared.

not easy to get insured on at 21 for reasonable money, i suggest getting some quotes before getting your heart set on it.

its a relatively cheap car to run but if anything goes wrong the bill is generally 1k+. lol

and theres not many places you can trust to take it to for work to be done. the amount of main dealer horror stories you hear...

perfectly fine for daily driving as long as you dont need it to ferry kids or a dog about or anything. it does make it easier if you have access to other cars every now and then though.

and buy one with the cambelt done (with proof)!!! saves a lot of hassle and money.
