Valver gear stick - should it move a lot?

Car  MK1 Clio 16v
Ever since i've owned my valver it has a strange problem where the gear stick moves backwards and forwards a lot, more than any other car i've been in. If i'm in first gear and i'm rolling, if i take my foot off the accelerator the gear stick violently moves forwards, and if i tap the accelerator it will violently rock backwards and forwards, i'd say it moves about an inch or so each way. Should this happen?

It happens in any gear but obviously not as violently in higher gears.

I had a new clutch fitted recently as well as head gasket and full service and he checked all the engine mounts etc, so i imagine he would have spotted if the gearbox mount was screwed?

No, it is definitly the g-box mount, known as a 'dog-bone mount'

same with mine kiz, knew it was the dogbones, need to get that sorted too!

It'll almost certainly be the dogbone mount as shown above. You can get one for about £15 from a motor factors and a garage shouldn't charge much at all to change as it's a 5-10minute job at most with a lift.

Yeah i've done that before, if you boot it, it can hurt your wrist sometimes...

Will it be obvious if the old dog bone mount is worn?

Yup mark 1 syndrome lol plus i would say the mounts gone. Sorted mine out but still had a little movement in the end

I'd expect a little feedback in any french car to be honest, it's just a bit too violent at the moment so i might just get it sorted before i damage my wrist ;)
