Viper kit fitted at last

  Ford Focus 1.4 LX

Well I finally got the kit fitted yesterday afternoon. It was a b@stard of a job, as there is so little space under the bonnet of the mk2 172.

The cold air feed pipe has been taken out of the front of the airbox and i have fixed the standard air feed pipe for the original airbox into it. That was the only reasonable simple way of doing it, and even taking the fog light out looked like being a horrible job.

I have only driven the car 20 or so miles now, but if definitely pulls alot harder all through the rev range. The VVC change is alot more noticable at 5000rpm too, alot like the Intergra Type-R i have driven now. I will see how it gets on this week after I have done more miles in it. I will also post a couple of pics of the install aswell.

Oh, and the noise is fantastic !

Heres some pics. I didnt mount the kit with the bracket supplied, I used a bracket I had from my Ramair kit i have previously used.

Id move that cold feed pipe to the front grill cos i dont think the factory one provides that much. (Im probably wrong!!!!!)

wallis - its easy to remove the airbox. there are 2 bolts at the front and back (20mm ones) that you undo. unclip the 2 cold air feed hoses (one clips to the airbox and the other clips to a metal bracket next to the front of the car) and it lifts out.

and believe me i would love to move the cold air feed pipe to the front grille but you try finding _any_space beind the grille !! it looks like the only options are possibly routing it down to a fog lamp and removing the fog lamp, or even extending the factory one so it gets a better feed.

sorry to be a party pooper....

but there is no way on gods little earth that an airbox of any sort can make a noticable difference on a 172..

the ONLY benefit is noise... and that would be something I dont want ..

the noise makes you think you are getting more.. and the note at vvt entry is bound to be more noticable..

Sorry again.. but IMHO - induction kits are a total waste of hard earned dosh.. unless.. you like the noise :)

Sorry to be a party pooper but even by my very rough timings from a stopwatch done by a mate this lunchtime with me driving, the car was definitely quicker 20-60, 30-70 and 50-80mph.

I have used a Ramair kit before that lost me bhp but gained low down torque, but this kit definitely improves power.

Hi Dave.

not sure where you are located.

but if you are ever up in Lancs. I can test it for you with an AP22.

I have a dtandard mk2 172 we can use for comparison. If it shows an increase, I will buy the beer !

Joe :)

Hey Dave, no probs.. Preston is 25 minutes from me..

let me know. We can arrange a testing session, would be good to see the results.

after 30 cans of Stella last night - 4 of us inc the 2 brides ! - I cant think about beer... but I will rekindle my desires when you can get up here

Hmmm...strictly speaking Id say the Viper is an airbox not an induction kit Capn.

Its sealed all the way so it should provide at least the performance of the original airbox and if the interior design of the box is better for gas flow then it will work better, as simple as that. Although in all honesty the original item is just a simple barrel shape, no particular reason why it wouldnt work anyway.

The Clio cup induction is just the same airbox but with a single large inlet instead of two small ones, and its connected through a big bore pipe down to a proper ram scoop under the headlight

If the viper doesnt give any gain over the Renault air box then wouldnt you be better fitting a panel filter in to the original air box.

I have definately noticed a difference with my induction kit as well. The key in my opinion is to use reasonably large bore heat resistant pipe that feeds air directly from the front of the car.

My cold air feed is located under headlight with an air scoop placed in bumper vent - this is phase 1 however.

From looking at pics of the mk1 172 there is a small vent (2 slots) below the headlight.

Unfortunately there is not one of these on the mk2

Still searching for somewhere to put it however....

Ive often talked this one over with 172 owners at meets etc. It is a big problem trying to find a decent cold air inlet on the front. Sounds funny if youve not seen under the bonnet of a 172 but it seems to be blocked up at the front for no real reason!

Foglight is the only decent option.

Hi,

My Viper kit arrived at last and I should be fitting it to my Mk1 172 over the next few days...

I have one question however, how much do filter oil do you actually spray on the filter?? The instructions dont seem to mention it at all...

Another thought occurred to me... is the filter in the Viper Kit replaceable?? -- it seems to be permanently attached to the airbox.

Not sure about Viper, it is on the BMC so could be the same on Viper as well. You will need to take it out to clean it.
