Yup VVT isnt utilised in the same way on a 172 as it is on the honda V-tec engines. On a 172 it comes in at about 1500 rev IIRC so it would be pointless.
i'm getting confused now, sorry having a blonde moment here...
My friend has a honda with a Vtec controller and he can adjust when the Vtec kicks in. I thought the Vtec was the cam's tilting, so with the controller he adjusts when he wants them to tilt right? If this is the case, can't they do it on the 172?
The surge you feel on the Vtec is the vtec unit shifting the cam phasing the surge you feel on the 172 is the engine coming on cam (basically reaching the point where more torque/power is delivered) the cam phasing on the VVT on the clio shifts at about 1500rpm
