Warped disc??

  RB FF 182
Hi guys,

Gonna be a hard one to explain...

Basically brakes aren't as sharp as I know they should be... I know I need new fluid which is probably the main cause as discs and pads LOOK ok but I'm no mechanic so I could be completed wrong!!

Basically at low speed, light braking, it feels like my front wheels are egg shaped (they're not btw... lol).

Basically braking power increases and decreases, as I said hard to explain. I don't tend to feel it at higher speeds, or harder braking.

Theres no squeeling or anything like that.

Anyone else had a similar problem, or give me advice on how to check discs are still OK?

Thanks.

you should feel it just as bad at higher speed... but it does sound like they maybe warpped.

Do you drive like a hero?

I drive like a Grandma... mainly due to having clients in my car most of the day! lol

Give it the beans sometime but not enough to warp a disc... Sometimes pulls to the left a low speed braking but not all the time.

I very much doubt you have warpped discs, not unless your name is Lewis Hamilton. Probs just needs new pads. Have you measured the thickness of the discs to see if they are worn to limits?

I've not been able to get the wheel off and have a proper look yet. Although casting my mind back to the service history they're probably due... Luckily a friend of mine, also a member on here, has offered to donate some front discs since posting this :), being as he no longer has his 172!

Priced up OE discs and pads all round at about £240 from eBay... and was quoted £60 to fit. Sound about right? (Obviously don't need to buy front discs anymore) I think rears by them selves were about £90 from NWperformance.

  Turbos.
Probably just knackered. Very hard to warp discs, even on track. Usually down to brake deposits stuck to the disc causing vibration. Not in your case though, you're probably metal on metal ;)

Try GSF pal, I found them rather cheap for my discs.

£60 for fitting?? Get a jack out and do it yourself!

sounds like warped to me. You should be getting a lot of vibration through the brake pedal, bit like ABS feeling, and the brake pedal will feel hard but will feel like its not really doing much either.

either the discs are warped or the pads could be leaving deposits on the disks.

Go and do some seriously HARD stops and see how they feel after. Possible you may need to take the pads and discs off and give them a wee sanding

Thanks guys! I'll go do some hard stops see if it clears it and get everything sorted on payday!!

My trolley jack is knackered. Gonna cost £50 for a decent one... I'll see if I can beg and borrow.

I'll also try GSF, I've heard of them.

Anyone know if Mintex pads and discs are any good?
